This coming May is the 40th anniversary of the Atlanta Flames moving to Calgary. To commemorate this occasion, we’re counting down the Top 40 Calgary Flames in history.
Coming in at #22 is Paul Reinhart.
It’s almost unfair to compare Reinhart to actual defensemen, because his style of play basically made him a fourth forward. A fantastic skater, he was drafted in the first round and jumped right into the NHL during Atlanta’s final season.
Moving north with the rest of the team, he became one of the club’s defining offensive weapons. He scored more than 60 points on five separate occasions, even hitting 75 points in his best offensive season. He received Norris Trophy and Lady Byng consideration throughout his Flames tenure.
Now, Reinhart wasn’t a perfect player. His skill-set skewed towards offensive firepower, often at the detriment of his defensive game. In his five superb offensive seasons, he had a combined plus/minus of +19. But when he was put in positions to score, he was dynamite.
Back issues gradually slowed Reinhart down. The Flames ended up trading him during training camp in 1988-89 to Vancouver for a draft pick. The pick was a bust, but they won the Stanley Cup that season so they probably weren’t too torn up about it.
Interesting post-script: the Flames drafted Reinhart’s eldest son, Max, in 2010. He played 23 games for the Flames during their rebuild.
