This coming May is the 40th anniversary of the Atlanta Flames moving to Calgary. To commemorate this occasion, we’re counting down the Top 40 Calgary Flames in history.
Coming in at #36 is one of the more underrated players in club history, Guy Chouinard.
Chouinard may have been the first truly great player in Flames franchise history. He scored 50 goals (and had 107 points) as a 22-year-old during his time in Atlanta, and he scored the final goal in Atlanta Flames history.
After his relocation to Calgary, he only played three seasons with the Flames. But he was productive, with 83, 80 and 72 points. Hardly a goon, he was a savvy two-way player who found ways to contribute in all three zones. In his three seasons with Calgary, only Kent Nilsson and Lanny McDonald had better single seasons and only Nilsson had more points during Chouinard’s whole tenure. That’s not bad company to keep.
By 1983, though, the Flames needed to make room for other talented forwards and they shipped Chouinard to the Blues. He retired from hockey just over a year later after sliding into the minors, showing that Flames GM Cliff Fletcher had a sixth sense for when an asset was about to depreciate.
He comes in at #36 because he was a very strong offensive presence for the Flames as they were getting established in Calgary (and then was able to make way for some even better players).
