The Calgary Flames are not going into a full on rebuild. Craig Conroy has made it very clear that the team’s objective is to re-tool on the fly and get back to being competitive as soon as possible.
Through the lens of a re-tool, I am coming up with some different trade scenario’s that the Calgary Flames might consider this off-season. On Monday we took a look at a couple trade targets in Nic Hague and Pavel Dorofeyev from the Vegas Golden Knights.
Today’s trade target is San Jose Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro.

Mario Ferraro – Defenseman – Left Shot – 25 Years Old – 6’0″, 209 Pounds – San Jose Sharks – $3.25 million – 2 Years Remaining

Ferraro was by far the San Jose Sharks best defenceman last season, which isn’t saying much. He was one of the few reliable pieces of a terrible San Jose team last season. Ferraro played in 78 games in 2023-24 putting up 3 goals and 18 assists in 78 games. He finished 7th in the NHL in blocked shots with 195 and was 32nd in the NHL in ice time among defencemen.
He was put in a tough situation playing the most difficult minutes on the worst team in the NHL. Despite that, he was still able to keep his head above water.
The best way I would describe Ferraro’s game to someone who is unfamiliar with him, is that he is like a younger Chris Tanev. On the ice they play a similar style. Ferraro is a defensive defenceman, he sacrifices his body by blocking a ton of shots, you can trust him in big minutes against the opposition’s top players, and he can play on the penalty kill.
Off the ice, Ferraro is known for being a high character person with a lot of personality. He’s the type of player who would become a fan favourite in a short period of time. Similar to how MacKenzie Weegar has endeared himself to Flames fans.

Ferraro would be a good fit for a re-tool Calgary Flames team. He will be 26 years old in September which fits the age range Conroy is looking for. Defencemen tend to age a little more gracefully than forwards. Ferraro is the type of player who could be effective into his mid-thirties.
The Flames don’t have anyone like Ferraro in their organization at the moment. A high end left shooting defender that can play in your top four. Those players don’t grow on trees.
The Flames have their two studs on the back end in Weegar and Rasmus Andersson. Both are right shots. Getting a left shooting d-man would go a long way in rounding out the Flames defence core.
The difficult part of pulling off a trade like this is convincing San Jose to part with Ferraro. It’s going to take a lot to pry him out of Northern California. But it might be worth it for a team like the Flames who want to get back to being competitive in a hurry.
It’s not going to be cheap to acquire this player. There are going to be a lot of NHL teams looking to add Ferraro if he does in fact hit the trade market.
San Jose is at a stage in their rebuild where they are trying to accumulate as many draft picks as possible. The Flames trade package would have to start with a first-round pick, and likely add another piece or two on top of that.
(This is not what I want the Flames to give up for Ferraro. Rather what I think the Flames would have to give up to acquire him)
Potential Trade Package:
To Calgary: Mario Ferraro
To San Jose: 2024 1st Round Pick (VAN), 2024 2nd Round Pick (DAL), Yan Kuznetsov
