Calgary Flames general manager Craig Conroy joined FlamesNation‘s very own Rob Kerr live in studio on Friday afternoon for a very special edition of Just A Game With Rob Kerr.
The two fixtures of the Calgary sports scene sat down for two hours to discuss Conroy’s long career with the Flames (on and off the ice) and his new role as the club’s general manager, which he assumed back on May 23.
Conroy, 51, played for the Flames from 2001 to 2004 and again from 2007 to 2011. He took on a number of different roles on the ice during his playing career and has displayed similar versatility since joining the Flames’ front office upon his retirement in 2011, working his way up from being the special assistant to then-general manager Jay Feaster to occupying the top job himself.
The Montreal Canadiens originally selected Conroy with the No. 123 overall pick in the 1990 NHL Draft. The Potsdam, N.Y. product — who was recently inducted into the New York State Hockey Hall of Fame — only appeared in 13 games over parts of two seasons with the Canadiens before being traded in 1996 to the St. Louis Blues, with whom he established himself as one of the NHL’s top two-way forwards.
The Flames acquired Conroy from the Blues in 2001 as part of an unpopular deal that sent Cory Stillman to St. Louis. Even future captain Jarome Iginla, who now works alongside Conroy with the Flames, expressed his skepticism about the trade at the time. But Conroy quickly silenced the doubters in Calgary, putting together a career-best 75-point season in 2001–02 and skating as the Flames’ No. 1 centre during their run to the 2004 Stanley Cup Final.
Conroy retained all of his talkativeness when he made the shift to an executive role with the Flames. For more than a decade, he’s been one of the most visible and approachable figures associated with the organization and he put all of that on display in his conversation with Kerr on Friday.
