Although the prospect in today’s profile was once a winger, he converted to play centre in 2024-25.
Bill Zonnon is a left-shot forward who played right wing for his first two Québec Maritimes Junior Hockey League seasons, but mainly played centre with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in 2024-25.
Let’s get to know Zonnon!
Scouting report
Born to Togolese parents in Montréal, Québec, Zonnon decided to become a hockey player when he watched P.K. Subban play for the Canadiens when he was five years old. Standing at 6’2”, 187 lbs, Zonnon was born on Oct. 3, 2006, meaning he’ll be 19-years-old shortly after being drafted. The forward plays for the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Québec Maritimes Junior Hockey League.
Steven Ellis of Daily Faceoff ranked Zonnon as the 31st-best prospect in his late April prospect list, having this to say about the forward:
“I like Zonnon. He’s very energetic, a tremendous playmaker and is looking more comfortable as a shooter, too. He’s physical, smart and is an excellent passer who can do some dangerous things with the puck. When he has the puck, he makes things happen in open space. Without it, he creates space for his teammates and he gets himself to the net. It feels like Zonnon has been underappreciated and that he deserves more attention for his work ethic and tremendous vision. He’s the type of player you can stick with other high-end talents and find success. I can see him going 10 spots higher in this draft if a team thinks they can mold him into something they need.”
The Hockey News’ Tony Ferrari ranks Zonnon as his 15th-best prospect, around their 18th overall pick. Here’s what he had to say about the prospect in his May countdown:
“While the QMJHL typically allows low-pace offensive players to thrive, Zonnon broke the mold by playing a relentless, physical game that pushes defenders onto their heels and forces mistakes. Zonnon’s hardly a technical expert when skating, but he simply flies around the ice, forechecking hard and disrupting play all over the ice. His offensive value comes from his playmaking, but his intensity and aggression will make him a valuable, 200-foot player who just makes life easier on those around him.”
Lastly, Sportsnet’s Jason Bukala ranked Zonnon as his 21st-best draft-eligible prospect, saying this about the 18-year-old:
“The first thing people analyze with Zonnon’s game is his skating. His first three strides are definitely short and somewhat choppy, but when up to speed he arrives everywhere on time and plays the game with detail and intensity. Zonnon contributed 28G-55A in the regular season for the Huskies. He’s deployed in all situations, works to extend plays and is always involved. He’s a very valuable team player who scores as much as he works to keep the puck out of his net.”
The numbers
Zonnon has played three seasons in the Québec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, improving each season. In 2022-23, he scored 16 goals and 39 points in 63 games, along with two goals and seven points in nine post-season games.
The next season saw him score 18 goals and 58 points in 68 games, with six goals and 10 points in 10 games. Most recently, Zonnon scored 28 goals and 55 points in 64 games, with eight goals and 16 points in 13 playoff games as the Huskies fell to Étienne Morin and the Moncton Wildcats in the Conference Finals.
Zonnon began to play centre in 2024-25, taking over 1,000 faceoffs and excelling in a two-way role.
Availability and fit
It seems as if Zonnon will be available when the Flames make their first pick at 18th overall. Some publications have him going late in the first round, where the Flames will be able to select another player thanks to the Florida Panthers’ first-round pick.
Whether the Flames should select him with their late first-round pick depends on whether or not they foresee him as a centre whenever he turns professional. If they do, Zonnon is a good bet to be a middle-six centre with the potential to be a second-line centre.
