Folks, we know that when it comes to the Calgary Wranglers, fans have their favourites. We keep getting asked about how Matvei Gridin is doing. About how Rory Kerins is progressing. And before they got called up recently, we had a lot of fans asking about the development of William Strömgren and Hunter Brzustewicz.
But it’s probably worth letting y’all know about Nick Cicek and how he’s doing this season.
Now, Cicek isn’t a “traditional” prospect. He’s not a Flames draft pick and, in fact, he was never drafted. He’s not as young as some of his teammates, as he’s 25. He’s already played some NHL games – 16 with the Sharks in 2022-23 – and he spent last season in Germany’s DEL with Adler Mannheim. If you want to make some comparisons to past Wranglers, his age makes him a comparable to Jonathan Aspirot, who’s recently found himself in the NHL with the Boston Bruins after a couple years with the Wranglers.
But man, Cicek has been the glue holding the Wranglers blueline together this season after signing as a free agent. He’s played on both sides – left and right – and that’s allowed him to play with just about everybody. Most prominently, he’s been paired with veteran Jeremie Poirier, second-year pro Brzustewicz, and a rookie in Etienne Morin. And he plays a really reliable, predictable, physical game that has seemingly earned him a ton of trust from Wranglers bench boss Brett Sutter.
Cicek isn’t flashy. He’s not fancy. He’s a bit of a throwback in how he plays. But he’s been quite good for the Wranglers at a time where they’ve needed someone to hold their defensive group together with the absences of Yan Kuznetsov and Brzustewicz.
Onto the updates!
