On Thursday, Sportsnet announced the detailed broadcast schedule for the Calgary Flames’ 2026-27 season. We had gotten the broad strokes of things before – the types of broadcasts for each and every game – but now we have the specifics in terms of what channel each game will be on.

Flames regional broadcasts on Sportsnet networks will have two familiar faces and a new one. Brendan Parker is back as host and Jon Abbott is back on play-by-play. They’ll be joined by new face Kevin Sawyer, a former NHLer who’s been part of TSN’s Winnipeg Jets broadcasts in recent years.

Sawyer is also remembered for his role in a wild line brawl at the end of a game between the Flames and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim back in 2001-02.

Anyhoo, here’s the rundown.

If the Flames play on a Saturday, it falls within Sportsnet’s national broadcast window, and will be available to Flames fans wherever they are within Canada.

Generally-speaking, if the Flames play a national Saturday game, it will be on Sportsnet West. They have 21 Saturday national games, and all but one are on this regional channel.

The newest addition to the Sportsnet broadcast portfolio are their Monday national streaming offerings. The Flames will play 10 Monday games that will be available for streaming only on Sportsnet+. The good news: they’re not restricted to the Flames’ broadcast region, and if you already subscribe directly to Sportsnet+ or get your TV through Rogers or Shaw, you get access to these games. The bad news: if you subscribe to Sportsnet via another TV provider, you need to sign up for a subscription upgrade to get these games on streaming.

There are eight streaming-only national games.

A new offering, Sportsnet has loaned their Wednesday national window to Amazon Prime for the next 12 years – Amazon had Monday national games for the past two years, but it’s Wednesdays now – and the Flames will have four games offered on Amazon Prime’s Wednesday Night Hockey streaming-only offering.

Finally, Sportsnet offers oodles of TV games for folks in the Flames’ broadcast region – there are blackouts outside of the region. Generally-speaking, if it’s a Flames game that’s not on Monday or Saturday, and it’s not one of those four Amazon games on a Wednesday, it will be a regional game offered on Sportsnet West. Overall, 50 Flames games will be available on regional TV.

Sportsnet has a weird situation in Alberta where Calgary and Edmonton are both in the same broadcast region, so if the Flames and Oilers are playing at the same time, one will be on Sportsnet West and the other on Sportsnet One. The shift to Sportsnet One is fairly balanced, though; both teams have games bumped to that channel by the other’s games about the same number of times.

Alright, this is a weird one, so let us explain it the way it was explained to us. There’s one Wednesday this season where the Oilers are playing on Sportsnet West and the Flames play at the same time. Because it’s a Wednesday, and part of Amazon’s national window, Sportsnet isn’t allowed to put the game on Sportsnet One, their national channel. And so they’re basically forced contractually to move that game to streaming on Sportsnet+.

We were told that this one game, on Feb. 17 against Boston, will be on Sportsnet+ but available to TV subscribers without any additional subscriptions needed. It’s worth noting that Oilers fans have to go through this “regional streaming” process on Feb. 3, when the Flames have a game on Sportsnet West and the Oilers have their regional game on Sportsnet+. (Much like with flexing regional games to Sportsnet One, the network is trying their best not to favour one of the two Alberta teams with their channel and/or streaming assignments.)

If you’re trying to keep your subscriptions – cable and otherwise – simplified, if you live in the Flames broadcast region and only want to subscribe to Sportsnet West, you get access to 60 Flames games.

The other 24 games are split as follows: 11 on Sportsnet One (10 national, one regional), nine on Sportsnet+ (eight national, one regional), and four on Amazon Prime.

Sportsnet’s television coverage of the Flames begins on Oct. 1 at home against Seattle. On radio, things are simpler: every single game will be on QR Calgary, starting with the pre-season opener on Sunday… also at home against Seattle.
