That’s a wrap for the 2025-26 National Hockey League season.
On Sunday evening, the Carolina Hurricanes took down the Vegas Golden Knights to win their second Stanley Cup in franchise history. This result has ramifications for the Calgary Flames, and unfortunately, it’s not a great one.
With the Golden Knights falling short, the Flames will pick 30th overall with the pick that they acquired in the Noah Hanifin deal back in 2023-24. While there isn’t much of a difference between the 30th and 31st overall picks, the Golden Knights losing has another ramification.
Earlier this season, the Flames sent Rasmus Andersson to the Golden Knights in exchange for prospect Abram Wiebe, Zach Whitecloud, a 2027 first rounder, and a conditional 2028 second-rounder. Had the Golden Knights hoisted the Stanley Cup, that 2028 second-round pick would’ve been upgraded to a 2028 first round pick. That’s a difference of 32 spots.
With this pick now being resolved, the Flames are set to pick sixth overall, 30th overall, 35th overall, 36th overall, 51st overall, 55th overall, 65th overall, 68th overall, 100th overall, 132nd overall, and 164th overall. As for their picks in the following drafts, they have two first and second rounders in both the 2027 and 2028 drafts.
Only one former Flame hoisted the Cup this year, Mark Jankowski. The 31-year-old was drafted by the Flames 21st overall in the 2012 draft, and spent parts of four seasons with the team. His most productive seasons came in 2017-18 and 2018-19, amassing 31 goals and 57 points in 151 games.
Unfortunately, both Hanfin and Andersson finished the 2025-26 season empty handed, as both players are still looking to win their first Stanley Cup.
The next key date is a little under two weeks away, as the 2026 NHL Draft takes place in Buffalo on June 26 and 27, before free agency begins on July 1.
