On the eve of the 2025 NHL trade deadline, the Calgary Flames (29-23-9, 67 points) are set to complete a season-high six game road trip. Their sixth and final game pits them against the Dallas Stars (40-19-2, 82 points), a team that’s become one of the Flames’ biggest rivals in recent seasons. Can the Flames close out their big trip with a big result?
Today’s broadcast begins at 6 p.m. MT on Sportsnet One and Sportsnet 960 The Fan.

The Flames

Projected lines via Daily Faceoff:
Jonathan Huberdeau – Nazem Kadri – Matt Coronato
Blake Coleman – Mikael Backlund – Joel Farabee
Yegor Sharangovich – Morgan Frost – Martin Pospisil
Ryan Lomberg – Kevin Rooney – Connor Zary
Kevin Bahl – Rasmus Andersson
Joel Hanley – MacKenzie Weegar
Jake Bean – Brayden Pachal
Via our pals at the rink, all indications are that Dan Vladar starts in net, backed up by Dustin Wolf. We’re projecting Daniil Miromanov and Adam Klapka as extras. Before you freak out about Vladar starting, recall that Wolf’s last outing in Dallas was pretty rough.
This brutally long, tough road trip is almost over. The Flames have gone 2-2-1 so far. They’ve been out-scored 12-10 through the first five games. They were shut out twice. But they’ve generally played reasonably well, especially when considering their opposition. The Flames remain right in the thick of the Western Conference playoff race, and anybody hoping for a bit of clarity regarding their direction heading towards the trade deadline…. well, they’re probably disappointed.
Keep an eye on Nazem Kadri; he has six points in the six games coming out of the 4 Nations Face-Off break.

The Stars

Projected lines via Daily Faceoff:
Jason Robertson – Roope Hintz – Logan Stankoven
Mason Marchment – Matt Duchene – Mikael Granlund
Jamie Benn – Wyatt Johnston – Evgenii Dadonov
Oskar Back – Sam Steel – Mavrik Bourque
Thomas Harley – Ilya Lyubushkin
Esa Lindell – Cody Ceci
Lian Bichsel – Matt Dumba
We’re projecting Jake Oettinger to start in net for the Stars, backed up by Casey DeSmith. The projected extras are Colin Blackwell and Brendan Smith.
The Stars are a really good hockey team. They’ve won five of six games since returning from the 4 Nations Face-Off break. Roope Hintz leads the NHL in points since the break. Wyatt Johnston leads the NHL with six goals in six games since the break. They’re a good, deep team that are a tough opponent for anybody.
The Flames will need to be sharp offensively and structured defensively if they want to leave Texas with two points.

Head to head

This is the second of three meetings between the Flames and Stars this season. Dallas beat the Flames by a 6-2 score back in December. They’ll close out their season series back in Calgary at the end of March.
