Due to the wildfires in the Los Angeles area, the Calgary Flames won’t play the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday evening.
On Wednesday afternoon, the league officially postponed Wednesday evening’s game, with the makeup date to be announced at a later date. Sportsnet’s Eric Francis was the first to report the postponement.
The Flames played against the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday in the Los Angeles metropolitan area with the game not being affected by the wildfires further west. Wednesday’s game – slated for an 8:30 p.m. MT start – seemed unlikely, as Sportsnet’s Eric Francis reported there was plenty of ash outside the Kings’ home arena, Crypto.com Arena.
Anecdotally, can tell you that sizeable ash was falling around Crypto.com arena as we walked in, which gives you an idea of just how big the four fires are. Masks were being handed out as we entered the rink this morning. The smell of smoke inside the arena is
With the game postponed, the next time the Flames are in action is on Saturday, when they’ll host the Kings in Calgary. Before stopping in Calgary, the Kings will face the Winnipeg Jets on Friday to kick off a timely five-game road trip against the Jets, Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks, and Seattle Kraken. The Kings return home on Jan. 20 to host the Pittsburgh Penguins.
This is the second postponed game of the season. The Tampa Bay Lightning were set to host the Carolina Hurricanes on Oct. 12, but due to Hurricane Milton, it was postponed until Jan. 7. Yesterday, that game was played with the Lightning winning 3-2.
No makeup date has been picked yet and it’s unclear whether or not the Los Angeles Lakers’ home game at Crypto.com Arena on Thursday will also be postponed because of the fires.
The fire itself has been aided by hurricane-force winds and a lack of water due to a drought. The fire has covered over 5,000 acres and has destroyed over 1,000 homes, while over 80,000 residents have evacuated their homes. Tragically, two people have passed away because of the fires as well.
Hopefully, the worst of the fires is behind Los Angeles and they can contain this devastating fire soon.
