Amidst a frenzy of trade activity on Wednesday, the Calgary Flames are reportedly closing in on a very significant move. Per a social media report from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Flames are “closing in on” a trade that would send veteran defenceman MacKenzie Weegar to the Utah Mammoth.
Weegar is in the third year of an eight-year deal he signed after arriving in Calgary in the 2022 off-season carrying a $6.25 million cap hit. The current year of his contract carries a full no-trade clause, so Weegar has ultimate approval over whether he stays or goes. He’s a right shot defender who turned 32 in January.
A product of Nepean, Ontario, Weegar played his junior hockey in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League with the Halifax Mooseheads. He was a seventh-round selection of the Florida Panthers in the 2013 NHL Draft. He worked his way up the ladder in Florida’s system, spending time in the ECHL with the Cincinnati Cyclones and in the AHL with the San Antonio Rampage, Portland Pirates and Springfield Thunderbirds.
He became a full-time NHLer in 2017-18 and quickly became a dark horse favourite among the analytics crowd. He played low in the lineup to start, but he played his role well and started to garner more and more attention. After a 44 point performance in 2021-22, he was traded to the Flames – along with Jonathan Huberdeau, prospect Cole Schwindt and a conditional 2025 first-round pick – in the Matthew Tkachuk trade. He signed his eight-year extension at the start of training camp prior to the 2022-23 season.
Since arriving in Calgary, Weegar’s been heavily relied upon on and off the ice. On the ice he’s been first over the boards in virtually every game situation, even strength and special teams. Off the ice, he’s been a big part of the leadership group as an alternate captain, and has been relied upon to be a voice for the locker room in chats with the media. After two really strong seasons in 2023-24 and 2024-25, he’s really struggled in 2025-26, posting 3 goals, 21 points and a minus-35 plus/minus rating through 60 games.
Sportsnet’s Eric Francis interviewed Weegar about the possibility of being moved elsewhere in a piece published earlier on Wednesday.
Time will tell if Weegar opts to waive his no-trade clause or if he remains a Flame.
We’ll have more on this story as it develops.
