On Tuesday, The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler published his third and final mock of this year’s NHL Entry Draft, with the real thing scheduled to kick off this Friday.
As you’re likely well aware, the Calgary Flames’ first pick in the draft comes at sixth overall. There’s been a range of opinions on who the Flames should draft at six, including from Wheeler himself, who had Calgary taking Alberts Šmits is his last mock. Now, Wheeler is joining the chorus of NHL experts who believe the Flames will target defenceman Carson Carels:
The sense I have with the Flames’ pick is that they’ve zeroed in on Carels and Verhoeff, in that order. I know others have mocked Björck, and he makes sense as the kind of player they need and have targeted recently, but my hunch is that they’re higher on the D. If the Rangers don’t pick Carels, he’d be a hand-to-glove fit for the Flames and potentially a future partner for Zayne Parekh. They’ve also done their due diligence with Verhoeff, who billeted with Jarome Iginla once upon a time as well. But I think Carels is the likely lean for them if he’s there.
Calgary’s second pick in the first round comes at 30th overall, courtesy of the Vegas Golden Knights. As Wheeler sees it, the Flames will use the pick to select Saginaw Spirit winger Nikita Klepov:
The Flames are one of the teams best-positioned to take both Ruck twins with their five picks in the 30-55 range. They’re a player type the Flames’ staff has never shied away from, too. That makes Liam an option here. I’ve also heard the Flames are another team that likes Hextall, but I don’t think he gets here. I’m not convinced Klepov does either, but if he does, he’s a player I’ve heard they’ve spent some extra time on, and they have a history with his agency.
After the initial publication of Wheeler’s mock draft, Calgary dealt one of their 2026 second-round picks as part of a trade to acquire Simon Nemec. That pick was their 35th overall selection, which Wheeler had pencilled in as goaltender Tobias Trejbal going to Calgary.
The Flames still have three second-round picks remaining, including the pick after the one they lost. In his revised mock draft after the trade, Wheeler had Calgary using those three picks to take Trejbal at 36th, centreman Egor Shilov at 51st, then defenceman Adam Nemec at 55th. Adam Nemec is the younger brother of newly-acquired Flame Simon Nemec, which could now make him an even more attractive target for Calgary.
Round 1 of the NHL Draft kicks off on Friday at 5 p.m. MT. Rounds 2 through 7 run the following day beginning at 9 a.m. MT.
