On Boxing Day, the 2027 edition of the IIHF’s annual World Junior Championships will kick off at Edmonton’s Rogers Place and Red Deer’s Centrium, featuring 10 national teams with the best and brightest of under-20 men’s hockey players from around the world.
And if Daily Faceoff’s roster projections are on the money, the Calgary Flames will be well represented up the road when the tournament begins.
On Wednesday, Daily Faceoff prospect guru Steven Ellis released his most recent roster projection for Canada’s national junior team. Featured on that roster were forwards Cole Reschny and Chase Harrington, and defenceman Carson Carels.
Reschny was the Flames’ first-round pick, 18th overall, back in the 2025 NHL Draft. A standout centre first with the Western League’s Victoria Royals and more recently with the University of North Dakota, Reschny has repped Canada at the Under-17 Hockey Challenge, the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, the Under-18 Worlds and the World Juniors. He was on last year’s bronze medal-winning Canadian national junior team, and is considered a strong contender to wear the C for Canada this year.
Harrington was the Flames’ second-round pick, 36th overall, in June’s NHL Draft. A versatile winger with the WHL’s Spokane Chiefs, Harrington was lauded for his ability to play a skill game or an agitating game with the Chiefs during his draft year. Well, he’s continued to do that this year, emerging as one of the WHL’s most complete – and entertaining – players. He played for Canada at the Under-17 Hockey Challenge a couple seasons ago, and he’s forcing his way into the conversation this year.
Carels was the Flames’ first-round pick, sixth overall, in June’s draft. A talented farm kid from rural Manitoba, he’s a really exciting young defender who was a standout with the WHL’s Prince George Cougars. Currently a freshman with North Dakota, he’s represented Canada at the Under-17 Hockey Challenge, the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, the Under-18 Worlds and the World Juniors. He was teammates with Reschny with Team Canada at last year’s World Juniors.
Other Flames prospects that have potential to suit up for other national junior teams include Cullen Potter, Ethan Wyttenbach and Jack Hextall for the United States, and Theo Stockselius for Sweden.
The 2027 World Juniors run Dec. 26, 2026 to Jan. 5, 2027 in Edmonton and Red Deer.
