The Calgary Flames have added another blueliner to their roster. The club announced on Monday morning that they’ve signed defenceman Brady Lyle to a one-year, two-way contract. Per CapFriendly, the deal’s worth $775,000 at the NHL level and $140,000 at the AHL level.

Lyle, 24, is an Ontario product who’s a right shot defender, listed at 6’3″ and 212 pounds, and he’ll provide some heft to the Flames (or more likely Wranglers) blueline.

Undrafted, Lyle spent five seasons in the Ontario Hockey League between North Bay and Owen Sound. He caught on with the AHL’s Providence Bruins in 2020-21 on an AHL deal and impressed enough to earn an entry-level deal with the Bruins. (In-between, he spent time on loan to HK Devta in the Slovak Extraliga.) He was traded to St. Louis midway through his first AHL season (2021-22) for future considerations. He has 61 points through 139 AHL contests, so if nothing else he can move the needle in that regard. He had 31 points in 51 AHL contests last season with the Springfield Thunderbirds.

Lyle may just be AHL depth, but he’s an established, productive pro blueliner in an organization that has a handful of promising but raw AHL defensive prospects in need of some guidance and seasoning. Lyle may be someone that can help give them guidance and seasoning.

The Flames now have 41 players under contract – four goaltenders, 14 defencemen and 23 forwards – and two unsigned restricted free agents under team control (Emilio Pettersen and Ben Jones).
