The Calgary Flames have signed another one of their prospects. Per the club, they’ve signed Swedish forward William Strömgren to a three-year entry-level contract. The deal begins in 2023-24, and he’ll report directly to the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers for the remainder of the season.

Strömgren, 19, was a second-round selection by the Flames in the 2021 NHL Draft. A product of Örnsköldsvik, he spent much of his youth in the MODO Hockey system, then jumped to Rögle BK for 2021-22, then moved onto Brynäs IF early in the 2022-23 season.

Strömgren is considered a toolsy, two-way forward – listed at 6’3″ and 180 pounds – who plays primarily left wing. He spent much of this past season as Brynäs’ utility man, working up and down the lineup as a complimentary winger. He had eight points in 45 games this season, playing mostly bottom six minutes. He also represented Sweden at this past year’s World Junior Championship tournament.

When Strömgren moved to Brynäs this past fall, his contract was announced by the club as being through the 2023-24 season. Brynäs was just relegated from the Swedish Hockey League to the secondary HockeyAllsvenskan, so perhaps they decided to make some changes. We’re attempting to get clarity on what happened with his Swedish contract.
