Here are Simon Nemec's goals from last season. You can tell he has a good shot and a dynamic skillset. He'll also help the Flames in 3 on 3 OT which they've struggled with mightily over the last few years. He's a project. But you can tell the potential is there.

The Calgary Flames got in on the trade action when they acquired Simon Nemec and Maxim Tsyplakov from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a 2027 first-round pick (Vegas), a 2028 first-round pick (Colorado), a 2026 second-round pick (NY Rangers) and prospect Etienne Morin.
Nemec, a 22 year old defenceman, was the second overall pick in the 2022 draft. He put up 11 goals and 15 assists in 68 games with the Devils last season.
Being in Calgary, we don’t watch a lot of New Jersey Devils hockey. So that begs the question: what exactly are the Flames getting in Simon Nemec?
To get some answers to that question, I put out a question on Reddit to New Jersey Devils fans asking them to give their thoughts on what Flames fans can expect to see from the young defenceman next season and beyond.
Let’s take a look at some of the responses.
“All the talent in the world, sometimes makes catastrophic brain farty mistakes. He would swing wildly between winning you the game on his own and losing it for you. Definitely needs some development work but I think the upside is massive, I was always a fan of this player.” – u/Chico_ftw“Offensive upside, good skater, bad in his own zone. Watch the Olympic if you want you see how well he can play. He was fantastic on the ice with Juraj Slafkovsky. I think we’ll regret this trade.” – u/njpg
“A very raw, but elite talented offensive defensemen. Needs a lot of work in the D zone but shows a lot of promise at the same time. Lacks confidence most of the time causing him to make mistakes, which is ironic because Luke Hughes is too confident and makes a lot of mistakes too. Overall, it’s unfortunate the Devils had to move on from him, but with Luke Hughes and Hamilton on the team Nemec was going to be held back significantly.” – u/mr-debil
“He’s a solid player who didn’t get much opportunity when everyone was healthy in New Jersey, but he also didn’t run away with a top 4 spot when he was given the opportunity. Calgary will give him a good opportunity to grow. He is very cerebral in the O zone but is terrible in the D zone. His underlyings are aren’t great, but he can be randomly clutch sometimes (see hatrick in Chicago this year)” – u/hobbygod
“A few years ago he and Kevin Bahl played as a pair and were pretty good considering how inexperienced they were.” u/lowdog39
“Nemec is extremely talented, needs to clean up his defense for sure, but overall I think he’ll have a prosperous career in the league. Win-Win for both teams I’d say, he’s raw but capable and if he can be coached well he’ll be a force.” – u/TheAshVolcano
“He’s a 3rd pairing defenseman that will need to be sheltered with PP qb value. He sees the ice at an incredible level, the issue is if the puck isn’t on his stick he has no idea what he’s doing. Maybe your coaches will do a better job of reaching him but he has shown exactly zero growth on the defensive side of the puck. He’s still young so don’t write off the opportunity for him to reach his ceiling but he will definitely need to take a good long look in the mirror if he wants to reach it.” – u/SubElitePerformance
There are a few key points that I took away from reading the 50+ comments from New Jersey Devils fans.
- Nemec is clearly a very talented player when it comes to the offensive side of the game. He is a good skater, passer of the puck, and has high end offensive instincts. He will be the quarterback on the second power play unit with Zayne Parekh quartering backing the first unit.
- It’s obvious that Nemec has a lot to work on when it comes to his defensive game. And that’s the case with every young defender. But Devils fans made a point to say that he makes a lot of mistakes.
- Ryan Huska is going to have to be patient with this player because Nemec is not a finished product by any means. Nemec is going to make mistakes and it might take him a while to figure of the defensive side of the game. Which is ok from a fans perspective. But how is the Flames head coach going to handle that?
