The Calgary Flames have drafted a couple of players from the Everett Silvertips the past few seasons.
In the seventh round of the 2019 draft, they drafted their franchise netminder, Dustin Wolf. In the 2024 draft, the Flames selected defenceman Eric Jamieson in the sixth round. One draft-eligible Silvertip of interest in the 2025 draft is Carter Bear.
Let’s get to know the 18-year-old forward!
Scouting report
The left winger was born on Nov. 4, 2006 in West St. Paul, Manitoba, a suburb of Winnipeg. Standing at 6’0”, 179 lbs, Bear is known for winning puck battles.
However, he won’t appear in a post-season game for the Tips in 2025 as he lacerated his Achilles tendon in March, ouch. Let’s take a look at what some scouts have to say about the 18-year-old.
“Bear suffered an unfortunate season-ending injury when he went down with a lacerated achilles at the beginning of March. He had contributed 40G-42A to that stage of his season and averaged over 16 minutes per game of ice time.Bear is the kind of player who can be relied upon to score timely goals and provide reliable detail, and tenacity, in all three zones. The Silvertips are a team that plays an “in your face” style of hockey and Bear fits the mold. He’s is always in the fight and uber competitive every night.”
“With Bear, you’re getting a decent package. He’s got a nice blend of skill, hockey IQ, and aggressiveness in his game. It’s a little bit of everything that makes him such an exciting prospect for the 2025 NHL Draft.”
“It is impossible to envision a situation where Carter Bear is not at least a middle-six forward with a long NHL career. He’s one of the most dominant and intense checking forwards in the CHL: if there’s a battle he’ll win it. Especially considering he’s near the tops of the CHL in scoring, more and more people are starting to get on board with Bear’s offensive game as well. He’s inside driven, creates shots from in-tight, and can handle or make plays with pace. Carter Bear has one of (if not the) highest floors in the draft, and there’s reason to believe that his scoring could translate to a top-six role.”
The numbers
Bear made his Western Hockey League debut in 2022-23, scoring a goal and two points in 19 games, being held pointless in five post-season games. The Mantioban became a regular in 2023-24, scoring 25 goals and 57 points in 67 games, along with four assists in nine post-season games.
Before his Achilles injury, Bear scored 40 goals and 82 points in 56 games, but is unable to help the Silvertips in their ongoing post-season bid.
Availability and fit
Bear went from a player who could’ve gone in the second round or later to a bona fide top 10 pick. However, the injury muddles his future a bit, as a lacerated Achilles is a major injury. The Flames benefit from that, as he may drop down to them depending on how early they pick with the New Jersey Devils and Florida Panthers’ picks.
As for fit, Bear is a high motor player with the ability to create and score. The Flames would be getting a player who could fill in nicely in the middle six, with a higher ceiling than that.
