The Calgary Flames are set to pick sixth-overall at this summer’s NHL Entry Draft.
After finishing fourth-last in the league this season, the Flames had a chance at a top-three pick this year. Ultimately, they fell back two spots after the lottery.
With the draft order set, Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis published his early projections for this year’s first round selections. At sixth, Ellis has the Flames taking Prince George Cougars defenceman Carson Carels:
Flames fans will feel the pain from falling outside of the top 10, but I do wonder if they take the chance to snag Carels here. Carels was not only one of the best young defenders in the WHL, but he was one of the best defenders in the entire CHL, period. He’s built like a tank and is an absolute powerhouse with the puck. Carels’ defensive awareness, two-way skill, strong physique, and high-end hockey sense make him truly high-end. I think we’re talking about a No. 2-3 defenseman in the NHL, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s the first or second blueliner taken this year.
This season, Carels had 20 goals and 73 points in 58 games in the Western Hockey League. The 17-year-old Manitoba native stands at 6-foot-2 and is currently listed at 194 lbs. Earlier this year, he made his World Juniors appearance with Team Canada, contributing an assist in five games.
At 28th overall, with Vegas’ pick from the Noah Hanfiin trade, Ellis has the Flames selecting Quebec Remparts forward Maddox Dagenais:
A lot of Dagenais’ power-forward tendencies come from his bigger frame. But he’s far more than that. He’s a decent skater who battles so hard to win every individual puck battle. Dagenais also loves to keep the puck on his stick. Thanks to his pure muscle, Dagenais is a possession machine, rarely giving the puck up on the rush. Dagenais has a good shot release but tends to choose less-than-ideal locations to fire it off. This would be the second center taken by the Flames this year (he played the wing at the U-18s), but one worth targeting for a middle-six spot.
The Toronto Maple Leafs won this year’s draft lottery and are widely expected to select Penn State forward Gavin McKenna. The San Jose Sharks earned the second-overall pick, and Ellis projects they will select Ivar Stenberg from the SHL’s Frolunda.
The last time the Flames selected at sixth overall was in 2016, when they took Matthew Tkachuk. This year marks Calgary’s second top 10 pick in the last decade, the other being in 2024, when they took defenceman Zayne Parekh at ninth overall.
