Flames 2018 seventh round selection Dmitry Zavgorodniy has had an exceptional season thus far, exploding for 22 points in 14 games, good for second in QMJHL scoring. He’s getting some recognition for his good work, being named to Russia’s team for the upcoming CHL-Russia series.
The CHL-Russia series really isn’t that significant, but it is a minor preview of the World Juniors. Being included in this tournament is usually a sign that a prospect has earned themselves a spot on the World Juniors roster. Dillon Dube and Matthew Phillips played for the WHL team last year, with Dube making and being named captain of the squad (Phillips didn’t get an invite). Although he had a strong case anyways, it’s a good sign that Zavgorodniy will be on Russia’s roster when the tournament opens on Boxing Day.
Since Zavgorodniy is a QMJHLer, he will only appear in the two games team Russia plays against the Q. He’ll be in action Nov. 13 and 15 at 5 p.m., likely broadcasted on Sportsnet.
The CHL rosters have already been announced, but do not include any Flames prospects. The only eligible Flames player (Canadians only – Milos Roman and Adam Ruzicka are both Slovakian) was D’Artagnan Joly, who was left off the Q’s roster.
