With teams around the NHL working to pare down their training camp groups ahead of Monday’s season-opening roster deadline, a half-dozen former Flames landed on the waiver wire on Sunday afternoon.

David Rittich and Jakob Pelletier likely stand the best chance of being claimed among the ex-Flames players included in the full list of 71 players waived on Sunday. John Beecher, Cole Schwindt, and Juuso Valimaki also landed on waivers, as did Flames draft pick Laurent Brossoit and former Stockton Heat captain Alex Petrovic.

Rittich, 34, signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the New Jersey Devils on July 2 but was waived on Sunday after the Devils claimed fellow netminder Remi Poirier from the Dallas Stars. The Czech goaltender began his NHL career with the Flames in 2017 and played for the team until late in the 2020-21 season, when he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Pelletier, 25, is entering the second season of the three-year deal he signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning as an unrestricted free agent in 2025. The 2019 first-round pick appeared in five NHL games with the Lightning in 2025-26 but spent most of the year with the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch, leading the league in scoring and being named to the end-of-season First All-Star Team.

Beecher and Schwindt were both waived by the Florida Panthers on Sunday after being beaten out for spots on the opening roster by Boko Imama and Sandis Vilmanis. Meanwhile, Valimaki came close to cracking the Carolina Hurricanes’ roster but was ultimately beaten out by Mike Reilly and Charles-Alexis Legault.

In addition to all the former Flames waived on Sunday, the Vegas Golden Knights also waived a player who might’ve had a chance to become a Flame in 2024 had certain things worked out differently: Alexander Holtz, once a highly-touted New Jersey Devils youngster thought by some to be available in a Jacob Markstrom deal, is now available to the league’s 31 other teams for free. As you may recall, the Flames eventually traded Markstrom to New Jersey in exchange for Kevin Bahl and a 2025 first-round pick, both of which ended up being much more valuable long-term pieces than Holtz.

The Flames will officially submit their season-opening roster on Monday, and based on what we’ve seen over the past few days, it appears it’ll include Brennan Othmann, but not Aydar Suniev or Alex Nylander. Once that step is complete, the Flames will be ready to kick off their 2026-27 slate of games against the Seattle Kraken on Oct. 1.
