The Flames made their final selection of the 2018 NHL draft, Dmitri Zavgorodniy from the Rimouski Oceanic of the QMJHL. Last season, Zavgorodny 26 goals and 47 points in 62 games.

As you can see from these rankings, it appears that the Flames may have scored some decent value here, snapping up the diminutive Russian winger. This pick is a little off-brand for the Flames who haven’t drafted many Russian players over the past few years. Zavgorodniy was a former eighth overall pick in the 2017 CHL import draft and has represented Russia at the U18s as well.

To my eye, this seems like a good bet in the seventh-round. Betting on skill in the later rounds is always a good policy and this pick seems to fit that description.
