On Saturday evening, the Calgary Flames hosted the undefeated Winnipeg Jets, falling 5-3 games in what was a competitive game. Their record now sits at 5-2-1

The rundown

Early in the first period, the Flames took the 1-0 lead, as a sharp angle shot from Mikael Backlund beat Eric Comrie. This is the first of many weird goals in this game.
Under two minutes later, the Jets tied the game thanks to Nikolaj Ehlers’ fourth goal of the season on the power play after the puck bounced off Rasmus Andersson’s skate. Another weird goal.
On the penalty kill, the Jets went up 2-1 as an unfortunate bounce over Johnathan Huberdeau’s stick led to a 2 on 1 for the undefeated team. After a pass over to Kyle Connor, he made no mistake to bury it to give the Jets the lead into the first intermission.
Around with just over two minutes left in the second period, Rasmus Andersson scored his fourth of the season, as Andrei Kuzmenko, passed to Andersson, who beat Comrie on another shot on a bad angle. This tied the game at 2-2 heading into the third period.
The Jets regained the lead on the weirdest goal you’ll see all season, as a Dylan Samberg shot from the point missed high and wide, but bounced off the glass and off Dustin Wolf’s back.
Once again, the Flames had an answer, as the puck fell to Nazem Kadri in the slot, a quick snap shot later over Comrie’s blocker, and the game was all knotted up at three.
The Jets scored the game-winning goal late in the third period, as Connor’s second of the game came on a beautiful shot from the left faceoff dot, giving the Jets their second power play goal of the game. They finished off the game with an empty netter, giving us the final score of 5-3.

Why the Flames lost

An issue in last Saturday’s game against the Seattle Kraken was the penalties the Flames took.
Once again it was an issue, as was their power play. The Flames allowed two goals on the penalty kill, while going 0/4 on the power play while also allowing a short-handed goal.  Of the five Jets goal, only one came during five-on-five action.

Red Warrior

Andrei Kuzmenko played 17;17 minutes of ice time, finishing with two points, the most of any player on the Flames. His first assist came on a puck battle he won and he just looked engaged all night long.

Turning point

Like the game against the Kraken last Saturday, the Flames took penalties in clusters. An early penalty allowed the Jets to quickly tie it, but the turning point of the game came when the game was tied, as they took back-to-back-to-back penalties, including giving the Jets a lengthy 5-3 three. The game-winning goal came on a penalty Nazem Kadri took behind the in the Jets end. You just can’t do that.

This and that

Over their last four games, the Flames are 1-2-1, but no team this season has been able to beat the Jets, as their record now sits at 8-0-0.
Rasmus Andersson’s fourth goal of the season is tied for the most goals by a defender, tied with Shayne Gostisbehere of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Up next

The Flames (5-2-1) return to action on Monday when they head to Vegas to face the Golden Knights.
