Cullen Potter has started to get hot for Arizona State.
This is the Nov. 18-24 edition of the Flames prospect round-up, where we look at how Flames prospects have done every week. Specifically, we’ll look at players playing overseas, in junior hockey, or at the college level, as the American Hockey League prospects will have an article of their own in the Wranglers Recaps.
Let’s take a look at the week that was.
Cole Reschny and Cade Littler
Cole Reschny, Cade Littler, and the North Dakota Fighting Hawks played an exhibition game against the U.S. National Development Team this past week, defeating them 6-1. Neither Flame prospect had a point, although it wouldn’t have even counted to their season totals. Littler has a goal and four points in 10 games this season, and Reschny has two goals and 11 points in 12 games.
North Dakota’s collegiate season resumes this weekend, playing a home-and-home against Bemidji State on Friday and Saturday.
Cullen Potter
Cullen Potter and the Arizona State Sun Devils played two games this past weekend, both against Eric Jamieson and the University of Denver. They fell 7-1 in the first game, but responded with a 3-2 overtime win in the second game. Potter picked up an assist on their lone goal in the loss and scored the overtime winner in their victory. This season, the Flames’ 32nd overall pick has three goals and 10 points in 14 games.
Arizona State is back in action this week, facing Ohio State for two games at home over the weekend. Friday’s game has a 3:00 p.m. MT start time, Saturday’s game has a 5:00 p.m. MT start time.
Theo Stöckselius
Theo Stöckselius remains out of Djurgårdens IF U20’s lineup and will miss the World Juniors at the end of the year. This past week, they fell 4-3 to AIK U20, with a matchup against Skellefteå AIK U20 on Saturday and Luleå HF U20 on Sunday morning.
Mace’o Phillips
Defenceman Mace’o Phillips and the United States Hockey League’s Green Bay Gamblers played two games against the Omaha Lancers this past weekend, defeating them 6-2 and 4-1. The Flames’ third-round pick in the most recent draft was held pointless in both games, giving him a goal and four points in 14 games this season.
The Gamblers have a busy week coming up. They play the Chicago Steel on both Wednesday and Friday, before taking on the Sioux City Musketeers on Saturday.
Ethan Wyttenbach
Death, taxes, and Ethan Wyttenbach getting on the scoresheet. Quinnipiac played two games this past week, defeating Clarkson 4-1 and then St. Lawrence 4-2. Wyttenbach had an assist in each game, as the Flames’ fifth-round pick in 2025 now has six goals and 16 points in 14 games.
Quinnipiac is back in action on Wednesday with a home game against Holy Cross. They’ll also host Stonehill on Saturday.
Aidan Lane
Aidan Lane and Harvard University played one game this past weekend, defeating Vermont University 5-1. Lane scored the team’s game-winning goal to give him three goals through seven games this season.
Harvard is back in action this weekend, hosting the University of Michigan on Friday and Saturday, with both games having a 5:00 p.m. MT start time.
Jakob Leander
It was a busy week for Jakob Leander and HV71 U20, as they defeated Växjö Lakers HC U20 by a score of 5-2, but then fell 3-2 to Örebro HK U20 and 4-2 to Färjestad BK U20. Leander, a right-shot defenceman, picked up an assist in their victory to give him a goal and five points this season, just a point shy of matching his career-best.
HV71 U20 is back in action this week, facing Linköping HC U20 on Wednesday.
Yan Matveiko
Flames’ seventh-rounder Yan Matveiko was in action this past week, scoring a goal in Krasnaya Armiya’s 6-1 win over JHC Dynamo-Kareliya and posting a goal and an assist in their 6-3 win on Monday over SKA Academy. He’s now surpassed last season’s offensive output and has 26 points through 26 games.
Jacob Battaglia
Moving to the 2024 draftees, second-round Jacob Battaglia was in action this week with the Kingston Frontenacs. It wasn’t a good week for them, as they fell 3-2 in overtime to both the Ottawa 67’s and Peterborough Petes, before dropping a 6-2 decision to the Petes in their most recent game. Battaglia picked up an assist in their 3-2 overtime loss to the Petes and scored a goal in their 6-2 loss. The winger now has 11 goals and 17 points in 22 games this season.
The Frontenacs will play on three consecutive days this week, hosting the North Bay Battalion on Friday, before hitting the road to play the Barrie Colts on Saturday and the Owen Sound Attack on Sunday.
Kirill Zarubin
Kirill Zarubin didn’t feature in Mikhailov Academy’s 9-0 stomping of Red Machine-Yunior this past week, as he was the backup netminder. In the 18 games he has played this season, the Russian netminder has a .929 save percentage and 1.95 goals against average with an 11-4-1 record.
Mikhailov Academy has two games this week, playing JHC Dynamo Moskva twice, once on Tuesday and the other game on Friday.
Trevor Hoskin
Trevor Hoskin didn’t feature in Merrimack’s 6-2 victory over Long Island University this past week. Although they didn’t need him, he leads the team with 12 points, along with four goals. Hopefully, he’ll be back in the lineup when they host Notre Dame on Wednesday or when they travel to play Dartmouth College on Saturday.
Luke Misa
Luke Misa and Penn State played two games against Minnesota this past week, falling 3-2 in the first game but recovering with a 2-1 victory. Misa was held pointless in both games as he has two goals and three points in 16 games this season, but future Flame Gavin McKenna had three even-strength points.
Penn State won’t be back in action for over a month, as they’ll play two games against RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) on Jan. 3 and Jan. 4.
Hunter Laing
Hunter Laing has continued his strong season with the Saskatoon Blades. In their 3-2 win over the Swift Current Broncos, he picked up an assist. The Blades fell 3-2 to the Brandon Wheat Kings in their next game, but he scored the game-opening goal. Laing now has 13 goals and 24 points in 22 games this season. It can’t be understated how important the move to Saskatoon ahead of last season’s deadline has been for his development. More on that in an article coming at some point in the future.
Before that article is released, the Blades will host the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday, before travelling to Alberta to play the Edmonton Oil Kings on Sunday.
Eric Jamieson
Eric Jamieson was the featured prospect in last week’s roundup, and he and Denver University were back in action this past weekend. They defeated Cullen Potter and Arizona State by a score of 7-1 on Friday, but fell 3-2 in overtime on Saturday. Unfortunately, Jameison didn’t score this past week, but he did pick up an assist and accumulate 14 penalty minutes in their win. The left-shot defenceman has five goals and nine points in 14 games this season.
Denver’s lone game this weekend is on Saturday, as they host Minnesota at Ball Arena, home of the Colorado Avalanche. The upgrade in the stadium is thanks to hosting the 2025 U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game.
Jaden Lipinski
This past week, Jaden Lipinski and the University of Maine played two games against Boston College, falling 7-3 in the first game before shutting them out 3-0 in the second game. Although Lipinski played in both games, he was held pointless in both, giving him two goals and seven points in 14 games this season.
Maine won’t play again until the first weekend in December, as they’ll host New Hampshire for two games.
Yegor Yegorov
Yegor Yegorov played in JHC Spartak MAX’s 5-1 loss to Almaz this past week, allowing five goals, and their 5-3 loss to Loco Yaroslavl, allowing four goals and being pulled after 49:33. For the season, the Flames’ sixth-rounder in 2023 has a .924 save percentage and 2.84 goals against average in 13 games.
JHC Spartak MAX will play Yegorov’s former team, Krylya Sovetov, next Monday.
Axel Hurtig
Axel Hurtig and the Calgary Hitmen were in action three times this past week, with all three games coming against the Medicine Hat Tigers. They fell 6-2 in the first game, lost 7-6 in a shootout in the second, and fell 3-2 in overtime in the third game. Hurtig was held pointless in all three games, finishing as a -1 for the week. This season, the Flames’ seventh-round pick in 2023 has two goals and an assist in 19 games.
Thankfully, the Hitmen don’t play the Tigers again this week, as they host the Moose Jaw Warriors on Thursday and the Red Deer Rebels on Sunday.
