Ethan Wyttenbach is on another level.
This is the Feb. 5-11 edition of the Calgary Flames prospect round-up, where we look at how Calgary Flames prospects have done every week. Specifically, we’ll look at players playing overseas, in junior hockey, or at the college level, as the American Hockey League prospects will have an article of their own in the Wranglers Recaps.
We’ll take a look at the games which were played last week, what’s next for all the players, and look at the standings.
College
As per usual, we’ll start with the Flames prospects in college, covering the four players in the NCHC conference, the two in both Hockey East and ECAC Hockey, and the lone Flames prospect in the Big Ten.
NCHC
The North Dakota Fighting Hawks returned this past weekend, playing two games against Minnesota Duluth. They fell 3-2 in overtime in the first game, but responded with a 4-1 victory. It was a great week for Abram Wiebe, who picked up an assist in the loss and three in the victory to give him three goals and 19 points in 28 games this season.
Cade Littler and Cole Reschny were both held pointless, with the latter leaving Saturday’s game, with him being listed as questionable for this weekend’s slate of games. Reschny has four goals and 25 points in 24 games this season, Littler also has four goals with 11 points in 26 games this season.
Eric Jamieson’s Denver Pioneers were in action as well, defeating Colorado College 3-2 in a shootout and 4-1. Jamieson was held off the scoresheet in both games, but picked up four penalty minutes in their 4-1 win. This season, the left-shot defenceman has six goals and 15 points in 31 games.
North Dakota is in action again this week, playing Miami (Ohio) twice at home on Friday and Saturday in NCHC action. Denver is also in NCHC action, as they play two games in Omaha on Friday and Saturday.
As for the standings, North Dakota and Denver are the cream of the crop in the NCHC, with North Dakota sitting on 42 points and Denver on 40. The top eight teams make the end-of-season tournament.
Hockey East
Of the two prospects in Hockey East, only Jaden Lipinski’s Maine was in action, falling 3-2 in overtime to Boston University. The right-shot centre picked up an assist, giving him three goals and nine points in 23 games this season. Trevor Hoskin’s Merrimack weren’t in action, as he sits on eight goals and 27 points in 26 games this year.
Merrimack will be back in action this coming weekend, as they play a home-and-home against Boston College, playing Friday and home and Saturday away. Maine hosts UConn this weekend on the usual days.
With 23 points, both Maine and Merrimack sit tied for sixth in Hockey East’s standings. Thankfully, all 11 teams in the conference make the end-of-season tournament, with teams one through five earning a bye.
ECAC Hockey
Ethan Wyttenbach’s emergence into a potential top line winger is a very welcomed sign for the Flames. His Quinnipiac Bobcats scored 17 goals in two games this past weekend, defeating Brown 9-1 and Yale 8-0.
To the surprise of no one, Wyttenbach had a strong weekend, scoring a goal and picking up two assists in the 9-1 win, and scoring a hat trick in the 8-0 win. In total, he has 19 goals and 47 points in 30 games, with his point total leading the entire NCAA. Again, he was a fifth-round pick.
Aidan Lane participated in his first Beanpot tournament. They lost 5-1 to Boston College on Feb. 2, which was covered in last week’s article. On Friday, they fell 3-1 to Dartmouth in ECAC Hockey, but recovered with a 4-1 victory over Northeastern in Beanpot action. Lane picked up an assist in the win, giving him five goals and 10 points in 24 games this season.
This week, Quinnipiac plays a home-and-home against Princeton, hosting them on Saturday before heading to New Jersey on Sunday. Lane’s Harvard plays Brown on Friday and Yale on Saturday.
Sitting at the top of ECAC Hockey is Quinnipiac thanks to a 13-2-1 record and 38 points. Harvard is down in fifth with a 10-6-0 record and 30 points. All 12 teams in the conference make the end-of-season tournament, with the fourth-best teams earning a bye.
Big Ten
Lastly, Luke Misa’s Penn State weren’t in action this past week, as the Flames fifth-rounder in 2024 has four goals and 11 points in 26 games this season. They’ll head to Michigan this coming weekend for two games against the Wolverines. Penn State currently sits in third in the Big Ten’s standings with 32 points, with all seven teams making the end-of-season tournament.
Junior
Moving to junior hockey, there are about six more weeks left remaining in the season, with five Flames prospects playing in three different leagues across North America.
WHL
Starting in the Western Hockey League, Andrew Basha’s Medicine Hat Tigers played two games this past week, defeating the Swift Current Broncos 2-1 and 8-1. Basha picked up an assist in each of the two games, giving him seven goals and 22 points in 15 WHL games this season.
It wasn’t a great week for Saskatoon Blades, as they went 1-1-1 thanks to a 4-3 overtime win against the Regina Pats, a 4-2 loss to the Lethbridge Hurricanes, and a 7-6 overtime loss to the Pats. Laing was held pointless in the first two games, but picked up an assist in the 7-6 overtime loss, see below. He now has 19 goals and 40 points in 47 games this season.
Flame prospect Hunter Laing passed it to Oiler prospect David Lewandowski for a Saskatoon Blades goal.
The Calgary Hitmen had a solid week, defeating the Brandon Wheat Kings 5-4 and the Pats 4-3, but falling 3-1 to the Broncos. Flames prospect Axel Hurtig was held pointless in the three games, giving him five goals and 14 points in 47 games this season.
On Friday, the Tigers return to action as they head to Red Deer to face the rebels. They’ll then host the Everett Silvertips on Saturday and the Rebels on Monday. The Blades host the Broncos on Friday, then hit the road to face the Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday and the Wheat Kings on Monday. Lastly, the Hitmen play a home-and-home against the Edmonton Oil Kings on Friday and Saturday, returning home to host the Silvertips on Monday.
The Tigers have already clinched their ticket to the post-season, as they have a 36-9-6 record and 78 points, albeit seven behind the Raiders for top spot in the WHL’s Eastern Conference. If the season were to end today, the Hitmen would have home ice advantage in the first round as they sit fourth, while the Blades sit sixth in the WHL’s Eastern Conference. Eighth of the 11 teams in the conference make the playoffs.
OHL
Jacob Battaglia and the Flint Firebirds had a solid week, defeating the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 5-1, then beating the Erie Otters 3-1, before losing 5-4 to the Saginaw Spirit. Battaglia scored a goal and picked up an assist in the 5-1 win, was held pointless in the 3-1 loss, but picked up another assist in the loss. This season, Battaglia has 19 goals and 35 points in 50 games, including five goals and eight points in 14 games with the Firebirds.
The Firebirds hit the road this week, playing the Guelph Storm on Friday, the Otters on Saturday, and the Oshawa Generals on Monday for what is a pretty weird road trip. Thankfully, the Firebirds have punched their ticket to the post-season, as they are tied with the Kitchener Rangers for the top spot in the Ontario Hockey League’s Western Conference.
USHL
The Green Bay Gamblers’ 13-game winning streak is becoming a distant memory, as they’ve now dropped six of their last eight games. This past week it was a pair of 6-3 losses to the Sioux Falls Stampede. Left-shot defenceman Mace’o Phillips played in both games, but was held pointless to give him a goal and seven points in 28 games this season.
This week, the Gamblers take on the Lincoln Stars on Friday and Saturday as they look to return to their winning ways. They’ve fallen out of the top two spots in the United States Hockey League’s Eastern Conference, meaning they aren’t in a spot to get a bye with 56 points. That said, they are just two points behind the Dubuque Fighting Saints, as six of the eight teams in the conference make the post-season.
Overseas
Lastly, we’ll look at the five players playing overseas, two in Sweden and three in Russia.
Sweden
In this week’s edition of “where the heck did Theo Stockselius play”, the answer for $200 was Djurgårdens IF’s senior team, where he played just under six minutes in a 2-1 victory over Linköping HC. Stockselius has been held pointless in his seven games with Djurgårdens this season, but it’s good he’s seeing action in the professional league. Djurgårdens don’t play again until Feb. 19.
As for Jakob Leander, his HV71 U20 fell 5-1 to Växjö Lakers HC U20, which isn’t all too surprising given they sit toward the bottom of Sweden’s U20 league. The defenceman has two goals and eight points in 29 games this season. HV71 U20 plays Frölunda HC U20 on Friday.
As for standings, HV71 U20 has 29 points, which is tied with IF Björklöven U20 for the second-fewest in the league. It’s worth noting that the bottom two teams play the top two teams from the second-tier to determine who plays in the top flight.
After bouncing around Djurgårdens’ website for about five minutes and maybe accidentally purchasing tickets (I don’t know any Swedish), I can tell you that their senior team sits in eight with 61 points. They’re pretty much locked into the play-in, where they’ll play a best-of-three to determine if they make the quarterfinals.
Russia
Kirill Zarubin played two games this past week for Mikhailov Academy, stopping 12 of 13 shots in a 5-4 shootout win over SKA Academy for a .923 save percentage. That was followed up with a 3-1 win over JHC Dynamo-Kareliya, with the Flames third-rounder in 2024 stopping 35 of 36 shots. This season, the 20-year-old has a .932 save percentage and 2.03 goals against average.
Yegor Yegorov played in two games this past week, as JHC Spartak MHA defeated both Sputnik (not the satellite, the hockey team) and Red Machine-Yunior by a score of 7-2. Yegorov squared stopped 22 of 24 shots (.917 save percentage) in the Sputnik win and 25 of 26 shots (.962 save percentage) against Red Machine-Yunior.
Yan Matveiko and Red Army played two games against Loko this past week, winning one 5-4 in a shootout and losing the other 7-2. Matveiko picked up an assist in the loss, giving him 14 goals and 33 points in 38 games this season.
Mikhailov Academy plays Belye Medvedi on Friday, JHC Spartak MHA plays AKM-Novomoskovsk on Sunday, and Red Army plays Almaz on both Thursday and Friday.
As for standings, Red Army sits second in the Western Conference’s Gold Division and will earn a bye. Mikhailov Academy sits in sixth and are six points behind the fifth placed team, meaning that they’ll likely have to play one of the top three teams in the Silver Division. That could be JHC Spartak MHA, if they can make up five points over Taifun. The good news is that they have two games in hand.
