Two Calgary Flames prospects are heading to the 2025 Memorial Cup.
This is the May 13-19 edition of the Flames prospect roundup, where we look at how Flames prospects did this past week, specifically those at the junior and college levels. The American Hockey League prospects have their own article in the Wranglers recaps.
Editor’s note: This will be the last Flames prospect roundup for the season. It’s been a blast writing these every week, and I can’t wait for next season to start.
Let’s take a week that was!
Andrew Basha
At this point last week, the Spokane Chiefs and the Medicine Hat Tigers were tied at one game apiece for the series. That win was the lone win the Chiefs would get against Andrew Basha and company.
Game 3 shifted to Spokane, Washington, but it was all the Tigers as they won 6-0. Basha scored the fifth goal in this one, his second of the postseason. Game 4, also in Spokane, was a bit closer as the Tigers won 5-2. Basha picked up an assist on the game-winning goal midway through the second period to put the Tigers up 3-1, eventually giving them a 3-1 series lead.
Due to the insane travel of the Western Hockey League, Game 5 was also played in Spokane. Thanks to a 4-2 victory and Basha picking up an assist on the game-winning goal, the Tigers clinched their sixth Ed Chynoweth Cup. It had been 18 years since their last title in 2007, and they haven’t won a Memorial Cup since they went back-to-back in 1987 and 1988.
Étienne Morin
Joining Basha in the Memorial Cup is Étienne Morin and the Moncton Wildcats. That has been well known since the Rimouski Océanic knocked off Matvei Gridin and the Shawinigan Cataractes in Game 7’s double overtime. What was less known was whether or not they’d win their third Gilles Corteau Trophy.
Last week’s article saw the Wildcats up 2-0 in the series. Game 3 was another victory for the Wildcats, as they defeated the Océanic 6-4. Morin’s second goal of the post-season, with just over five minutes left, broke a 3-3 tie, with the left-shot Morin adding an assist on the game-winning goal.
Etienne Morin already owns the @monctonwildcats' record for most playoff points by a d-man 👏 Now the #Flames prospect extends his lead with his 39th postseason point on his second goal of the 2025 #QPlayoffs! 🔥 #RoadtoMemorialCup
Up 3-0 in the series, it looked as if the Wildcats were going to complete the sweep, but the Océanic had other plans. In Game 4, the Memorial Cup hosts took a 4-0 lead to the first intermission and made it a 5-0 lead heading into the third period. Julius Sumpf’s goal with three minutes left was all the Wildcats could muster in the 5-1 loss.
Game 5 was another Océanic victory, as they won 3-1 in New Brunswick to make it a 3-2 series. Morin was once again held off the scoresheet. Thankfully, the Wildcats ended the reverse sweep bid on Monday, defeating the Océanic 3-2, taking a 3-0 lead in the second period. The Océanic scored twice in the third period, but the Wildcats held on for their third Gilles-Courteau Trophy.
Setting up the Memorial Cup
Joining the Wildcats, Tigers, and Océanic in the 2025 Memorial Cup are the Ontario Hockey League’s London Knights, who went 16-1 in the post-season. Over the last two playoffs, the Knights are 32-3, a true juggernaut of the Canadian Hockey League. If you recall, Zayne Parekh’s Saginaw Spirit defeated the Knights in the final last season.
The tournament begins on May 23, with Basha and the Tigers facing the Océanic. Saturday sees the Knights and Wildcats face off, before the two Flames’ prospects face each other next Monday. To finish the round robin, the Tigers play the Knights on Tuesday and the Wildcats have a rematch with the Océanic on Wednesday.
The championship rounds start on May 29 if a tiebreaker is needed between the third and fourth-placed teams. May 30 is the semifinal, and Jun. 1 is the final.
It’s going to be a fun tournament!
