Jacob Battaglia has started to get going for the Flint Firebirds.
This is the Feb. 12-16 edition of the Calgary Flames prospect round-up, where we look at how Flames prospects have done every week. Specifically, we’ll look at players playing overseas, in junior hockey, or at the college level, as the American Hockey League prospects will have an article of their own in the Wranglers Recaps.
We’ll take a look at the games which were played last week, what’s next for all the players, and look at the standings.

College

There’s less than a month remaining in the NCAA regular season. The nine active players (not including the injured Cullen Potter or Henry Mews) are still jockeying for position in their respective conferences.

NCHC

Abram Wiebe, Cole Reschny, and Cade Littler played two games with the University of North Dakota this past weekend, as they defeated Miami (Ohio) 1-0 and 4-3 in overtime. Wiebe scored the overtime winner, with Reschny getting an assist. Wiebe also had an assist earlier in that game. This season, Wiebe has four goals and 21 points in 30 games, Reschny has four goals and 26 points in 26 games, and Littler has four goals and 11 points in 28 games.
Eric Jamieson’s Denver played two games this past weekend, defeating Omaha twice on the road by a score of 5-2 and 3-1. The Flames’ defence prospect was held pointless in both games, giving him six goals and 15 points in 33 games this season.
North Dakota has just four more games left this season, with their next two games coming this weekend against St. Cloud State. Denver is off this coming weekend, but their final two games before the end-of-season tournament will be two home games against Cullen Potter’s Arizona State.
The top eight teams in the nine-team NCHC will make the end-of-season tournament. North Dakota sits first with 47 points, with Denver right on their trail with 46 points (albeit with two additional games played).

Hockey East

Jaden Lipinski and Maine played twice this game, falling 2-0 and 4-3 in overtime to UConn. Lipinski picked up an assist in their loss, giving him three goals and 10 points in 25 games this season.
Trevor Hoskin and Merrimack played a home-and-home against Boston College, defeating them 4-2 in the home game and falling 4-2 in the game on the road. Hoskin didn’t play in either game, as he sits on eight goals and 27 points in 26 games this season.
Maine and Merrimack will play one another this coming weekend, as Merrimack travels to Orono, Maine. The games are on Friday (5:00 PM MT) and Saturday (5:00 PM MT). As for the standings, Merrimack is fifth in Hockey East with 26 points, and Maine is ninth with 24 points. All 11 teams in the conference make the end-of-season tournament, with teams one through five earning a bye.

ECAC Hockey

Quinnipiac played a home-and-home against Princeton over the weekend, winning both games by a score of 4-1. Unsurprisingly, it was another good week for Ethan Wyttenbach, as he scored and picked up an assist in both games, giving him 21 goals and an NCAA-leading 51 points. Again, he was picked in the fifth round.
The Flames selected Harvard’s Aidan Lane in the sixth round of the same draft, with Harvard falling 3-2 in a shootout and overtime to Brown and Yale respectively. Lane picked up an assist in the overtime loss, giving him five goals and 11 points in 26 games this season.
Quinnipiac plays twice this weekend, hosting Cornell on Friday and Colgate on Saturday. Afterwards, they have just four more games left this season before the ECAC Tournament. Harvard plays Union on Friday and RPI on Saturday, with both games coming on the road. They also have four more games left this season.
As was the case in the last edition of the prospect roundup, Quinnipiac sits at the top of ECAC with a 15-2-1 record and 44 points. Harvard is fourth thanks to a 10-7-1 record and 32 points. All 12 teams make the end-of-season tournament, with teams finishing first through fourth earning a bye.

Big Ten

It was a rough week for Luke Misa and Penn State, as they fell 5-4 in a shootout and 6-3 to Michigan in Big Ten action. Misa was held pointless in both games, giving him five goals and 13 points in 28 games this season.
With the pair of losses, the first-placed Michigan has pulled away from Penn State, as they have 43 points to the Nittany Lion’s 33 points. Penn State plays twice against Ohio on home this weekend, as all seven teams make the end-of-season tournament.

Junior

The four Flames prospects in the Canadian Hockey League still have about a month and a half of the season remaining, while the United States Hockey League will play until early April.

WHL

The Medicine Hat Tigers and Andrew Basha played three games this past week, falling 5-4 in overtime to the Red Deer Rebels, 4-3 in overtime to the Everett Silvertips, and smashing the Rebels 10-1. Basha scored in the 4-3 overtime loss and picked up an assist in the 5-4 overtime loss, before picking up a goal and an assist in their 10-1 win. This season, the 20-year-old has nine goals and 26 points in 18 games.
Over in Saskatchewan, the Saskatoon Blades didn’t have a great week, going 1-1-1. They beat the Swift Current Broncos in a shootout, fell to the Prince Albert Raiders in a shootout, then fell 3-2 to the Brandon Wheat Kings in regulation. Hunter Laing scored in the first two games, giving him 21 goals and 42 points in 50 games this season.
The Calgary Hitmen found better success this week, splitting the home-and-home against the Edmonton Oil Kings, winning 5-3 and losing 4-3. They also defeated the Silvertips 3-1. Flames’ prospect Axel Hurtig picked up an assist in the 5-3 win, giving him five goals and 15 points in 50 games this season.
This week, the Tigers play a home-and-home against the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Friday and Saturday. The Blades are on the road to play the Rebels on Friday and the Hitmen on Saturday, while the Hitmen host the Blades on Saturday and the Rebels on Sunday.
Thanks to leading their division, the Tigers sit second in the Western Hockey League’s Eastern Conference, seven points behind the Raiders, but five ahead of the Oil Kings. If the season were to end today, the Hitmen would have home ice advantage in the first round thanks to 79 points, with the Blades sitting sixth with 60 points. All three teams  will make the playoffs, as the ninth-placed team currently has 45 points.

OHL

This past week, the Flint Firebirds were on their weird road trip where they faced the Guelph Storm, Erie Otters, and Oshawa Generals. They beat the Storm 5-1, fell 6-4 to the Otters, and shutout the Generals 5-0. Jacob Battaglia has started to get going, scoring a goal and an assist in the 5-1 win, scoring a goal in the loss, and scoring twice in the 5-0 win. This season, he has 23 goals and 40 points in 53 games, and nine goals and 13 points since joining the Firebirds.
This weekend, the Firebirds host the Sudbury Wolves on Saturday, then head across the Detroit River to play the Windsor Spitfires. That second game is a big one, as both teams sit on 79 points, tied for the division lead, or second in the Ontario Hockey League’s Western Conference. The Kitchener Rangers currently sit first in the conference with 80 points.

USHL

The Green Bay Gamblers got back on track this past weekend, defeating the Lincoln Stars 2-0 and 5-0. Flames defence prospect Mace’o Phillips was held pointless in both games, giving him a goal and seven points in 30 games this season.
It’s a busy weekend for the Gamblers, as they play the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Friday, the Chicago Steel on Saturday, and the Madison Capitols on Sunday. As it stands, the Gamblers have 60 points, fourth in the USHL’s Eastern Conference. They are just two points out of second in the conference, which is a spot that gets a bye. Six of the eight teams in the conference make the post-season.

Overseas

As it stands, there are five Flames’ prospects currently playing overseas, two in Sweden and three in Russia.

Sweden

Theo Stockselius didn’t dress for Djurgårdens IF U20 this weekend, instead remaining with the senior team who weren’t in action. Over seven games in the Swedish Hockey League, the 18-year-old has been held pointless.
Seventh-rounder Jakob Leander was in action, as HV71 U20 fell 5-4 to Frölunda HC U20 thanks to a goal with just 22 seconds left in a tie game. The right-shot defenceman was held pointless, as he has two goals and eight points in 30 games.
If Stockselius remains with the senior teams, Djurgårdens IF returns to action on Wednesday against Brynäs IF. They also play Timrå IK on Friday. HV71 U20 is back in action this coming weekend, playing Rögle BK U20 on Saturday and Malmö Redhawks U20 on Sunday.
Djurgårdens IF sits eighth in the SHL standings and are more than likely set to play a best-of-three play-in game for a chance to play in the quarterfinals. HV71 U20 lost ground on AIK U20, meaning they’re likely set to play a game against one of the top two teams in the second tier of junior hockey to see if they remain in the top tier.

Russia

Kirill Zarubin and Mikhailov Academy were in action twice this past week, defeating Belye Medvedi 4-2 and Yegor Yegorov’s JHC Spartak MHA by a score of 5-1. In the 4-2 victory, Zarubin stopped 38 of 40 shots for a .950 save percentage, giving him a .933 save percentage and 2.03 goals against average this season.
Yegor Yegorov and JHC Spartak MHA played twice this week, defeating AK-Novomoskovsk 3-2 in overtime, but falling 5-1 to Mikhailov Academy. Yegorov played in the loss, allowing five goals on 32 shots. Overall, he has a .922 save percentage in 30 games this season.
Yan Matveiko played one game this past week, as Red Army fell 4-3 in a shootout to Almaz. Red Army beat Almaz 2-1 the following day, but Matveiko wasn’t in the lineup. This season, the Flames’ seventh-rounder in the 2025 draft has14 goals and 33 points in 39 games.
This coming week, Mikhailov Academy plays Sakhalinskie Akuly on Saturday and Amurskie Tigry on Monday, both at home. JHC Spartak MHA plays Red Machine-Yunior on Friday and JHC Dynamo SPB on Sunday. Red Army plays Sakhalinskie Akuly on Thursday, Amurskie Tigry on Saturday, and Taifun on Monday.
As it stands, Red Army is second in the Western Conference’s Gold Division, while Mikhailov Academy sits sixth in the Gold Division. Red Army would get a bye, while Mikhailov Academy would play the third-placed Silver Division team. JHC Spartkak MHA sits fourth in the Silver Division, four points behind SKA Academy.
