The end of the college regular season is rapidly approaching.
This is the Feb. 17-23 edition of the Calgary Flames prospect round-up, where we look at how Flames prospects have done every week. Specifically, we’ll look at players playing overseas, in junior hockey, or at the college level, as the American Hockey League prospects will have an article of their own in the Wranglers Recaps.
We’ll take a look at the games which were played last week, what’s next for all the players, and look at the standings.

College

The end of the college regular season is rapidly approaching for the nine active Flames prospects in four different collegiate conferences. Let’s take a look at how they did this past week, as well as what’s coming up for them this week.

NCHC

Cole Reschny, Abram Wiebe, and Cade Littler all played two games this week, as North Dakota fell 5-4 in a shootout to St. Cloud State, but getting their win back the following day by a score of 6-4. In the loss, Reschny picked up an assist, while Wiebe picked up two assists. The following day, Wiebe scored a goal and an assist, while Reschny picked up another assist.
So far this season, Littler has four goals and 11 points in 29 games, Reschny has four goals and 28 points in 28 games, and Wiebe has five goals and 25 points in 32 games, winning the past three NCHC Defenceman of the Week. Speaking of NCHC defencemen, Eric Jamieson and the University of Denver were off.
Both North Dakota and Denver have just two games left, as North Dakota plays two games on the road against Western Michigan this weekend, while Denver hosts Cullen Potter’s Arizona State this weekend, sadly with Potter not in the lineup.
North Dakota has locked up first in the NCHC, but their match-up with Western Michigan, along with Denver’s matchup with Arizona State, has huge implications for the end-of-season tournament. Denver is currently tied with Western Michigan for the second seed (46 points) and North Dakota’s opponent for the end-of-season tournament has yet to be decided as well. Arizona State currently sits eighth with 22 points, with Omaha is just one point behind. Only eight teams make the end-of-season tournament.

Hockey East

The Flames have two prospects in Hockey East, Maine’s Jaden Lipinski and Merrimack’s Trevor Hoskin. Those two teams played two games this past weekend, with Maine winning both games, Friday’s game by a score of 5-3 and Saturday’s game by a score of 5-2. Unfortunately, Hoskin missed both games, while Lipinski picked up an assist in Saturday’s victory. Lipinski has three goals and 11 points in 27 games this season, while Hoskin has eight goals and 27 points in 26 games this season, missing the last four Merrimack games.
Maine has three more games left this season, two at home against Northeastern this weekend, and one on the road against Vermont on Mar. 7. Merrimack will host Vermont for two games this weekend, before hosting UMass Lowell in the final game of the season on Mar. 5.
As for the standings, Maine sits sixth in the Hockey East standings with 30 points, with fourth in reach. Merrimack sits eighth with 26 points, as all 11 teams in the conference make the end-of-season tournament, with teams first through fifth earning a bye.

ECAC Hockey

Ethan Wyttenbach and Quinnipiac played twice this past week, falling 6-1 to Cornell on Friday, but defeating Colgate 5-2. Wyttenbach was held pointless in the loss, but picked up a goal and two assists in the win to give him 22 goals and an NCAA-leading 54 points in 34 games this season.
Aidan Lane and Harvard also played twice this past week, falling 4-1 to Union and 3-1 to RPI, as Lane was held pointless in both games. That gives the Flames’ sixth-rounder in the 2025 draft five goals and 11 points in 28 games this season.
This weekend will be the final weekend for ECAC Hockey, as Quinnipiac faces Dartmouth and Harvard on the road, while Harvard plays Princeton and Quinnipiac at home. Quinnipiac needs just one point to lock up first in the conference, while Harvard currently sits fifth, with the potential to move to fourth with two wins and two Princeton losses. All 12 teams in the conference make the end-of-season tournament, with the top four teams earning a bye.

Big Ten

Lastly, Penn State was in action for two games against Ohio State, smashing them 11-4 on Friday, then 5-4 in overtime on Saturday. Misa picked up two goals and an assist in the blowout win, but was held pointless in the overtime win. This season, Misa has seven goals and 17 points in 30 games, while future Flame Gavin McKenna had an eight-point night in that 11-4 victory.
Penn State currently sits third in the Big Ten standings with four games remaining. There’s an outside shot they catch up to both Michigan and Michigan State, but would need those two teams to lose out while winning their last four games. Penn State plays two games against Notre Dame this weekend, followed by two home games against Wisconsin the following week.

Junior

There’s just over a month remaining in the Canadian Hockey League schedule for the three Flames prospects in the Western Hockey League and the one in the Ontario Hockey League. The United States Hockey League still has about six weeks remaining in its schedule.

WHL

Andrew Basha and the Medicine Hat Tigers played two games this past week, defeating the Lethbridge Hurricanes 3-0 and 4-3 in overtime. Basha picked up a goal in the shutout victory, and an assist in the overtime victory to give him 10 goals and 28 points in 20 games this season.
Further east, the Saskatoon Blades and Hunter Laing defeated the Red Deer Rebels 5-2 and the Calgary Hitmen 3-2 in overtime. Laing’s lone point in the two games was an assist in the win over the Rebels, giving him 21 goals and 44 points in 52 games this season.
As for the Calgary Hitmen, they fell 3-2 in overtime to the Blades, but responded with a 2-1 win over the Rebels on Sunday and a 5-4 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors on Tuesday. Hurtig was held off the scoresheet in all three games, but was a +3 with six shots on Tuesday. The left-shot defenceman has six goals and 16 points in 52 games this season.
This week, the Tigers play the Edmonton Oil Kings on Tuesday evening, then the Hitmen for a home-and-home on Friday and Saturday. The two games the Hitmen play are against the Tigers, while the Blades play the Penticton Vees on Wednesday, the Prince George Cougars (Laing’s former team) on Friday, and the Regina Pats on Saturday.
Both the Tigers and the Hitmen have punched their ticket to the post-season, with the Blades not too far behind. The Hitmen currently sit second in the WHL’s Eastern Conference, while the Hitmen are fourth with 74 points, three behind the Oil Kings. As for the Blades, they are sixth with 64 points, five behind the Brandon Wheat Kings for fifth and 15 ahead of the seventh-placed Pats. They’ll clinch a post-season berth with one more point.

OHL

Over in the OHL, Jacob Battaglia has started to get going for the Flint Firebirds. This past week, they fell 6-5 to the Sudbury Wolves in overtime, but picked up a crucial 2-1 win over the Windsor Spitfires on Sunday. That win saw Battaglia score his 24th goal of the season, as he now has 41 points over 55 games this season, including 10 goals and 14 points in 19 games with the Firebirds.
This week, the Firebirds are in action at home against the Ottawa 67’s and the Peterborough Petes. More importantly, they sit second in the OHL’s Western Conference with 82 points, as they have a three-point gap over the Spitfires, and sit just two points behind the Kitchener Rangers for first in the conference. They’ve played one more game over the Rangers and Spitfires.

USHL

Down in the USHL, the Green Bay Gamblers have picked up their game in recent weeks after struggling since the end of their 14-game winning streak. After defeating the Lincoln Stars twice in last week’s edition, they defeated the Dubuque Fighting Saints 8-4, the Chicago Steel 7-1, and the Madison Capitols 2-1 to give them a five game winning streak. Mace’o Phillips picked up two assists in the 7-1 win, giving him a goal and nine points in 33 games this season, along with 138 penalty minutes.
The Gamblers are back in action with three games this week, facing the Youngstown Phantoms for two games on Feb. 27 and Feb. 28, before a rematch with the Capitols on Mar. 1. With 66 points, the Gamblers sit second in the USHL’s Eastern Conference, six behind the Phantoms and three ahead of the Fighting Saints. The top six teams in the eight team conference make the playoffs, with the top two teams earning a bye.

Overseas

Lastly, the Flames have five players playing overseas, two in Sweden and three in Russia. Let’s take a look at how they did this past week, as well as what their upcoming week looks like.

Sweden

Theo Stockselius played two games for Djurgårdens IF’s senior team this past week, as they fell 5-2 to Brynäs IF and 2-1 to Timrå IK. In the 5-2 loss, Stockselius played a little under nine minutes and was a +1, then he played nine and a half minutes in their 2-1 loss. The Flames’ second-rounder in 2025 is still pointless over nine Swedish Hockey League games.
Jakob Leander and HV71 U20 played twice this past week, falling 4-1 to Rögle BK U20, but defeating the Malmö Redhawks U20 by a score of 3-2. Leander was held pointless in both games, giving him two goals and eight points in 32 games this season.
It’s a busy week for Djurgårdens IF, as they play HV71 on Thursday, MoDo on Friday, and Leksands IF on Saturday. They currently sit 10th in the SHL, meaning that if the season were to end today, they’d play a best of three against Brynäs IF in the first round of the playoffs. They are just two points behind Timrå IK for eighth in the SHL.
HV71 U20’s win was a big one, as they are currently tied with IF Björklöven U20 for the second-fewest points in Sweden’s under 20 league. The two worst teams play a relegation game against the two best teams in the second tier. They play Södertälje SK U20 on Feb. 27, before a date with the last placed Västerås IK U20 on Saturday.

Russia

Over in Russia, Kirill Zarubin played two games this past week for Mikhailov Academy, stopping all eight shots he faced in a 4-1 loss to Sakhailinskie Akuly. They then defeated Amurskie Tigry 5-2, with Zarubin stopping 22 of 24 shots to give him a .933 save percentage and 2.01 goals against average this season.
Yegor Yegorov’s JHC Spartak MHA defeated Red Machine-Yunior 6-2, but fell 7-2 to JHC Dynamo SPB. The Flames prospect goaltender only appeared in the loss, allowing three goals on nine shots, as his save percentage dropped from .922 to .920, sitting with a 2.86 goals against average this season.
Yan Matveiko’s Red Army played three games this past week, falling 1-0 to Sakhalinskie Akuly, 2-1 to Amurskie Tigry, but defeating Taifun 3-1. Matveiko was held pointless in all three games, giving him 14 goals and 33 points in 42 games, as his play has dipped significantly recently.
Mikhailov Academy is back in action this week, playing Taifun on Wednesday and AKM-Yunor on Saturday. JHC Spartak MHA plays JHC Atlant on Wednesday, Red Machine-Yunior on Friday, and JHC Dynamo-Kareliya on Monday. Lastly, Red Army plays SKA-1946 on Sunday and Monday.
As for standings, Red Army sits third in the Western Conference’s Gold Division, meaning they’ll probably get a bye. Mikhailov Academy sits sixth, one spot out of the bye positions, meaning a date with a team from the Western Conference’s Gold Division is likely. JHC Spartak MHA is in that Silver Division, but they currently sit four points out of a post-season spot with two games in hand. They have to start winning.
