The Calgary Flames have conducted a bit of business. The club announced on Monday that they’ve re-signed minor league goaltender Artyom Zagidulin to a one year, two way deal.
The 24-year-old Russian netminder came over to North America last season and served as the 1B to Jon Gillies’ 1A in Stockton. While Zagidulin’s box-car stats weren’t overly amazing – he went 16-7-1 with a 3.07 goals against average and .898 save percentage – he won a lot of games and had a knack for making the big saves at key times. (His nickname in Stockton was “Big Snag Zag.”)
With Gillies likely going to free agency this summer, Zagidulin suddenly becomes the incumbent in Stockton. As of right now, he’s the only goaltender other than David Rittich with an active contract for 2020-21 – Dustin Wolf’s contract will slide since he’ll be in junior. It seems probable that he’ll be joined by Tyler Parsons in Stockton’s goaltending tandem for next season.
Terms of the deal weren’t available. Zagidulin was a pending restricted free agent with arbitration rights, as his entry level deal expires this season.
