Flames roster moves: Jake Bean to IR, Dryden Hunt returns, Zayne Parekh to World Juniors

The Calgary Flames have made a flurry of roster moves over the past day or so, so we thought we’d do a quick rundown of what’s happened.
The Flames placed Jake Bean on the injury reserve list on Thursday. That move reduces their active roster by one and gives them some flexibility to bring another player up from the Wranglers, if desired. Bean would be ineligible for the active roster for at least seven days dating back to his last appearance, which was on Dec. 6.
The Flames have yet to provide an update on Bean’s status, other than that he’s being evaluated. Sportsnet’s Pat Steinberg has noted on Flames Talk this week that Bean has been dealing with something for awhile and the evaluation is more about if he can keep playing through it or not. It seems probable that Bean’s injury will keep him out longer than the minimum IR term, so it won’t really hinder the Flames much.
After sending forward Dryden Hunt down to the Calgary Wranglers of the American Hockey League on Thursday, the Flames called him back up on Friday morning. Hunt played for the Wranglers on Thursday night (and had two assists), which made him eligible for a call-up again under the NHL’s paper transaction rules. It’s Hunt’s third call-up of the season. He’s four days away from becoming waiver eligible again, and he’s been a really reliable 13th forward for the Flames over the past few seasons.
Finally, the Flames have formally activated blueliner Zayne Parekh from the injury reserve list and loaned him to the Canadian national junior team. Parekh has been out of action since Nov. 7, but he’s been working his way back. Postmedia’s Wes Gilbertson reported that Parekh was skating in a regular jersey at Thursday’s morning skate after previously wearing a no-contact jersey in practices.
While Parekh is away with the World Junior team, he won’t count against the Flames’ active roster or salary cap, and the games the Flames play won’t count against the 40-game threshold that gets Parekh a year closer to unrestricted free agency.
The Flames active roster is now at 22 players – two goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards – and their injury reserve list is at three (Bean, Martin Pospisil and Sam Honzek). They’re back in action on Saturday when they visit the Los Angeles Kings.
