The Calgary Flames didn’t hit the practice ice on Friday, but they made a pair of roster moves nonetheless. On Friday, the Flames activated forwards Blake Coleman and John Beecher from the injury reserve list.
Beecher has been out of action since suffering an upper-body injury during the Flames’ Jan. 3 home game against Nashville. Beecher had gotten involved in a scrum with Predators forward Michael McCarron (who had been involved in a series of back-and-forth slash skirmishes with MacKenzie Weegar), leading to McCarron throwing punches at Beecher before the Flames forward could fully engage in the altercation… and then Beecher throwing a punch at McCarron when the Predators player was being restrained by the officials.
Beecher answered the bell, so to speak, in a subsequent fight with Predators defender Nicolas Hague. Not known for his pugilism, Beecher got the worse of his sixth fight as a pro and ended up suffering an upper body injury during the fray. To add insult to literal injury, he received a one game suspension for his punch on McCarron. Between the suspension and his injury, he missed the last 15 games. In 19 games with the Flames following a waiver claim from Boston, Beecher has two assists.
Meanwhile, Coleman suffered an upper body injury during the Flames’ Jan. 8 road game in Boston. He was hurt while wrestling with Bruins defender Mason Lohrei, eventually ending up falling to the ice with Lohrei on top of him. Coleman missed the final 12 Flames contests prior to the Olympic break. In 44 games this season, Coleman has 13 goals and 21 points.
Per our pal Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet, Coleman skated with Morgan Frost and Matvei Gridin at the first couple of practices back from the Olympic break, while Beecher has been between Ryan Lomberg and Adam Klapka.
After activating Beecher and Coleman, the Flames’ active roster sits at the maximum of 23 players: two goaltenders, seven defencemen and 14 forwards. That total does include Jonathan Huberdeau, who’s injured and about to undergo season-ending hip surgery in March, and Martin Pospisil, who’s at the Olympics with Slovakia. Huberdeau is eligible to be placed on the IR whenever the Flames decide that they need another open roster spot.
The Flames return to action on Thursday when they visit the San Jose Sharks.
