On Thursday night, the Calgary Flames were not particularly good against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The severity and frequency of their mistakes snowballed, and they lost on home ice by an 8-3 score.
On Friday at practice, the Flames made some changes to their lineup in advance of a Saturday night clash with the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers.
Jonathan Huberdeau – Nazem Kadri – Martin Pospisil
Blake Coleman – Mikael Backlund – Matt Coronato
Yegor Sharangovich – Connor Zary – Jakob Pelletier
Ryan Lomberg – Kevin Rooney – Walker Duehr
Andrei Kuzmenko
Kevin Bahl – Rasmus Andersson
Joel Hanley – MacKenzie Weegar
Jake Bean – Brayden Pachal
Tyson Barrie – Daniil Miromanov
Devin Cooley
Dustin Wolf
(Thanks, Pat.)
There’s a lot to dig into here.
Up front, the coaching staff has kept the Kadri line and the Rooney line together from last game. The Kadri trio has been pretty effective, all things considered, and if the idea is to feed that trio a heavy diet of offensive zone starts and hope they can create offence, that makes sense. Meanwhile, the Rooney trio is a variation on the fourth line mix we’ve seen all season, and it’s been pretty solid for its role.
Here are the seeming changes from Thursday’s game: Coleman and Sharangovich have swapped lines, while Pelletier is subbed into the lineup in place of Kuzmenko. Pelletier was a scratch against Tampa Bay in order to slot Lomberg back into the lineup. Prior to Lomberg being away from the team for the birth of his third child, Kuzmenko had been scratched for two games in a row. Kuzmenko was minus-1 with zero shots against Tampa, and seemingly swaps out in favour of Pelletier and his energy. Makes sense.
On the back end, Bahl and Andersson stay together, as do Bean and Pachal. The notable change is Hanley swapping in, bumping Miromanov to the sidelines, which also sees Weegar slide from the left side to the right. Miromanov was scratched twice this season – on Oct. 19 in Seattle and Oct. 30 against Utah – but otherwise he’s been attached at the hip to Weegar. (When Miromanov was scratched, Weegar remained on the left side and played with Pachal.) Hanley hasn’t played since Nov. 29 against Columbus, and he’s been exclusively a third pairing option so far this season.
Miromanov has been getting some… let’s call it “constructive criticism” from fans on social media for how he defended on the eighth Tampa Bay goal on Thursday, chasing after a lost stick and leaving Jake Guentzel alone to complete his hat trick.
We’ll see if these new lines carry over from Friday’s practice to Saturday’s game, or if it was just the coaching staff experimenting with a few different looks.
