The Calgary Flames have locked up one of the most promising, and young, members of their developmental pipeline to a contract. On Monday afternoon, the Flames announced that they’ve signed forward Theo Stockselius to a three year entry-level contract. The deal carries a $1,015,833 average annual value.
A product of Norrtalje, Sweden, Stockselius was selected by the Flames in the second round, 54th overall, of the 2025 NHL Draft. A promising, lanky young centre who survived a brush with thyroid cancer a few years ago, Stockselius has been part of the Djurgardens IF organization since 2023. He’s enjoyed a ton of success since joining DIF, winning a playoff title in the U18 Nationell (2023-24), back-to-back titles in the U20 Nationell (2024-25 and 2025-26) and representing his country at both the Under-18 Worlds (winning silver) and the Junior A World Challenge (also winning silver).
Stockselius had a strong start to 2025-26 in junior, generating buzz that he could make Sweden’s World Junior roster. However, he suffered a pretty nasty skate cut to his leg in late October and he was sidelined for months as he recovered, eventually returning to action in late January. Due to injuries on the senior club’s roster, he ended up playing a regular fourth line role in the SHL for much of the last portion of the season before returning to junior to help his team win the playoff tournament. In the regular season he had 16 points in 11 junior games and one point in 16 SHL games. In the playoffs he had 20 points in 11 junior games and zero points in three SHL games. He was named the playoff MVP in junior.
Because of Stockselius’ age, his ELC is eligible for a slide year in 2026-27 and there’s a possibility he could spend the season loaned back to Djurgardens. (His North American rights are held by the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen.) The loan approach is very similar to what San Jose did with defensive prospect Leo Sahlin Wallenius a year ago. A second-round pick in 2024, Sahlin Wallenius played the 2024-25 season with his club team, the Vaxjo Lakers. He was signed in the spring of 2025 to an ELC, then was loaned back to Vaxjo for the 2025-26 season as his NHL deal slid for a year due to his age. Everybody got what they wanted and maintained flexibility.
Stockselius is a July 2007 birthday, so he’s (a) eligible for the upcoming World Juniors and (b) the youngest player in the Flames system. Between his size and skill, he’s one of the most promising players in the system. We’re fascinated to see the next steps he takes in his development journey.
