The Flames added a pretty safe player from the UFA pool, got some secondary scoring in Stockton, and also saw some pretty stellar goaltending performances. Lots of good stuff coming ahead.

Harvard is struggling, stumbling out of the gate with a 2-5-0 record -they were outshot 50-16 by Minnesota on Saturday- and Fox is getting tangled up in the mess. His seven assists means he has been involved in just under 50% of goals scored by Harvard this year.

Parsons returned from a lingering illness, clearly showing that his previous results were not an accurate reflection of him. He came back to save 135 of 141 shots (0.957 SV%) and post a shutout. He was named the ECHL’s goalie of the week for his efforts. Let’s hope this continues.

Schneider’s struggles continued this weekend, as he posted three sub-.900 games. The other one saw him stop 24 of 25.

A few words on Glenn Gawdin

Gawdin has had a great season so far for Swift Current. He’s clearly a strong contributor for the Broncos, having his name attached to 43 of the 87 total goals they’ve scored this season (32 of those being primary points), in addition to 24 of 54 5v5 points (16 primary points there).
Of course, there are some red flags. Gawdin is in his fifth WHL season, already picked by the Blues in 2015 and returned to the draft pool for some underperforming years when he slightly improved on his draft and draft+1 years, but not so much to warrant at least a contract. Those concerns might be overstated, as Prospect-Stats has his 2015-16 and 2016-17 production mostly around first line, but you shouldn’t really be expecting much anyways.
He’s also playing on a line with Tyler Steenbergen and Aleksi Heponiemi, two undervalued studs in their own right. His numbers don’t suggest Gawdin is a passenger on this line, but the age advantage he has on the other two (2017 picks) can’t be ignored.
Overall, I think signing Gawdin was a pretty smart bet that could definitely pay off for the team. It’s a long shot, but given the numbers, both career and season, he seems to be a guy with middle six upside.
