The Calgary Flames often draft Western Hockey League players.
In 2025, they drafted Cole Reschny in the first round out of the Victoria Royals. The draft before that, they selected Andrew Basha in the second round, as well as both Eric Jamieson and Hunter Laing in the sixth round. Jaden Lipinski and Samuel Honzek were also drafted out of the Western Hockey League.
It makes sense given their proximity to WHL teams. Well, there could be another WHL player eligible when the Flames select with the Vegas Golden Knights’ pick: Kamloops Blazers forward J.P. Hulbert.
Scouting report
Hurlbert was born in Allen, Texas and stands at 6’0”, 183 lbs. Before joining the Blazers last season, Hurlbert played for the U.S. National Development Team. Upon joining the Blazers, the forward was named an alternate captain. The 18-year-old is listed as a winger, but is capable of playing centre.
Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis ranked Hurlbert as his 21st-best draft eligible prospect. Here’s what he had to say about the Blazers’ forward.
“No CHL rookie was as lethal as Hurlbert, who recorded 42 goals and 97 points with Kamloops. He’s an exceptionally skilled forward who, at one point, was so far ahead in the WHL scoring race that nobody was in the same area code. The University of Michigan commit has a great one-touch shot that he routinely unleashes on the power play. He’s also an exceptionally smart puck-mover who has very little difficulty getting it where it needs to be against players his own age. My two pre-season concerns – his play away from the puck and his lack of high-end speed – remain issues. But overall, he’s a safe bet for the first round.”
Similarly, Sportsnet’s Sam Cosentino ranked Hurlbert as his 20th-best eligible draft prospect, noting this about the winger.
“Wrapped up an incredible regular season with a hat trick in the second-last game of the Blazers’ schedule. A first round match-up against long-time rival Kelowna proved to be quite the challenge. The Rockets neutralized Hurlbert’s production by limiting his time and space, and so the Blazers were swept out of Round 1. This experience is exactly what Hurlbert needed to understand how to elevate his game when it is needed most.”
Lastly, The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler also ranked Hurlbert as the 20th-best prospect in his March update.
“He has work to do in the faceoff circle, and that, combined with his sub-6-foot size, results in him being viewed as more of a winger by some (NHL Central Scouting has moved his position from C to LW as well), but he has chipped in on the PK with the Blazers, was given a letter as a newcomer, and has some quiet competitiveness to go with his skill. And while his feet can kick a little through his stride, he plays with pace and has made plays with the puck all over the ice.He also has an NHL shot and one-on-one skill, both of which have created multiple highlight-reel goals this year (including short-handed). He has clear junior talent, and now NHL clubs have to decide whether they think there’s a true top-six NHLer there. He has been consistently good when people have shown up to watch him play this year but he’s not viewed as a star prospect per se.”
The numbers
In 2024-25 with the USNDT, Hurlbert scored 16 goals and 31 points in 34 games, but was a minus-21 and picked up 38 penalty minutes. The development team hasn’t been particularly great for the past few years, and with Canadian Hockey League players being allowed to play in the NCAA, Hurlbert joined the Blazers for the 2025-26 season.
Playing 68 games for the Blazers, Hurlbert scored 42 goals and 97 points. Not only did he lead the Blazers in both categories, Hurlbert finished fourth in WHL points and tied for fourth in goals. The Blazers made the postseason, finishing fifth in the WHL’s Western Conference, but bowed out to their rivals, the Kelowna Rockets in the first round.
That completed Hurlbert’s junior career, as he’s committed to the University of Michigan and will play with Flames prospect Henry Mews in 2026-27.
Availability and fit
Hurlbert availability depends on how far the Vegas Golden Knights go in the playoffs. They sent their 2026 first rounder to the Flames for Noah Hanifin a couple of years ago, and if they lose in the first round, they could select as high as 24th. Hurlbert could be gone by then, as his consolidated ranking according to Elite Prospects is 20th, though they have him ranked 36th, as does The Hockey News’ Tony Ferrari.
The 18-year-old proved to be a line-driver and a point-getter. There’s a lot to like about Hurlbert, namely his shot, but his skating doesn’t appear to be the best. Moreover, the Flames have a logjam of young wingers already on the roster, and potentially a few more on the way in the coming years.
