Gavin McKenna is widely projected to be the number one, or number two overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. McKenna is a left-handed left-winger, which is not in short-supply on the Calgary Flames, but let’s dive into what other assets he could bring to the team if drafted by them.
McKenna was born in Whitehorse, Yukon, and was the first ever Yukon-born player to be drafted first overall into the Western Hockey League. His strong offensive skills and elite playmaking abilities have made him a constant standout in the league.

Scouting report

Jason Bukala of Sportsnet and the Pro Hockey Group states McKenna has an unseen offensive impact, but still struggles defensively.
For the first time in several months, I found myself really wrestling with my No. 1 overall ranking, and that’s because McKenna has addressed most of the concerns I’ve had about his overall game while launching his offensive impact into an entirely new level. In his last 10-game segment, McKenna produced 5G-13A, with 2G-4A coming on the power play.
He averaged over 24 minutes of ice time with the bulk of his shifts coming at even strength and with the man advantage. He very occasionally killed penalties. Over the segment McKenna’s rating was minus-2. He’s a dynamic offensive talent, but still has some growing to do defensively and it’s what continues to separate him and Stenberg at this stage of my process.
On one hand, McKenna had one of the best outputs we’ve seen from a draft-eligible forward after registering 14 points in seven games. In fact, he had at least one point in every single game, including four in the bronze medal game. But scouts still saw a bit of what concerned them: primarily, a lack of 5-on-5 involvement and so-so effort levels away from the puck. That being said, he’s clearly the most skilled prospect in the 2026 draft, and he’s as electric as they come on the power play. I still like his upside more than most, but he has to find a way to impact shifts more consistently to become a true No. 1 prospect.
For his freshman season in 2025-26, McKenna played for Penn State in the NCAA. As of April 6, he lead the team in scoring with 51 points (15 goals, 36 assists) in the regular season.
Averaging 1.46 goals per game, he became the first Penn State player to win the Big Ten scoring title, achieving 38 points (11 goals and 27 assists), in 24 games. He also set the freshmen record for both points, with 51, and assist, 36, in one season. Rounding out his impressive season with Penn State, McKenna was also named one of the top 10 Hobey Baker Award finalists.
Before his college career, he played three seasons with his junior team, the Medicine Hat Tigers, he was a force on the ice through it all. In his 2024-25 season with the Tigers, McKenna assisted the team to the 2025 WHL Championship and a Memorial Cup finals appearance. This season contained many milestones for him, including breaking a point streak that lasted a record 36 games. This record was previously held by Connor Bedard and Logan Stankoven.
He ended his final season with the Tigers with an astonishing 41 goals and 88 assists in only 56 games, finishing second place in points in the WHL with 129.
He also made two World Junior Championship appearances in both the 2025 and 2026 tournaments. In his most recent showing, he played 7 games, bringing in 4 goals and 10 assists. Team Canada ended winning the bronze medal in this tournament.

How would he fit with the Flames?

If the Flames were to end up with the first overall draft pick, McKenna would likely be the player to join their roster. What would he bring to the team?
McKenna has a strong shot and unique play-making abilities that would be an asset to the team. High IQ players have the unique ability to elevate the games of the players around them. Also, elite draft players can be strong building blocks for a team in the midst of a rebuild. His natural patience in play making will assist in teaching his fellow teammates to slow down for success.
The Flames are in need of generational players, which you can find in McKenna. If he were drafted to the Flames, more free agents may be inclined to sign with them in order to play alongside McKenna, creating a roster of young, but talented players.
Do you think the Flames would, or should, target Gavin McKenna if they win either draft lottery drawing and pick at first or second overall? Let us know in the comments!
