Martin Pospisil missed over half of the 2025-26 NHL season due to a concussion sustained in the pre-season. With only 22 games played, how does his production this season hold up to what he was able to generate in previous seasons with the Calgary Flames?

Expectations

Pospisil came into the season after signing a $7.5 million ($2.5 million AAV) three year contract extension with the Flames. This signing could signify the organization’s hope and faith in Pospisil, but did he deliver?
After being drafted to the Flames in the fourth round of the 2018 NHL draft, he has consistently played as a mid lineup, stable player. In the 2024-25 season, he racked up 4 goals, 21 assists, totalling 25 points in 81 games.
He is infamous for his speed and physicality, but is most known for being an instigator on the ice and sometimes taking unnecessary penalties. This was not projected to change, because sometimes that kind of player is what a team needs.
Pospisil had also expressed his desire to play more as a centre, but would also be happy staying in his current, most consistent position as a winger.

Performance

Pospisil missed the first 49 games of the season due to a concussion sustained in the pre-season. He practices with the team a few times before coming back to game-play, but was ultimately not deemed healthy enough to get back to being game-ready until January.
He played two games with the Calgary Wranglers as part of a long-term injury conditioning loan to get him back into the game before being recalled back up to the Flames on Jan. 20.

Returning to the lineup tomorrow after missing 4 months w his 5th concussion, the quandary for Martin Pospisil is simple: while toning down his game could put his career in jeopardy, so could his desire to continue playing the same way. ⤵️

As part of his 2025-26 season, he represented Slovakia in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, where Slovakia finished fourth. Pospisil played four games and ended the tournament with no goals and one assist.
His international play will not end with the Olympics. He is headed to the 2026 IIHF World Championships from May 15-31 to represent Slovakia once again. Alongside Pospisil, his Flames teammates Devin Cooley (United States) and Olli Maatta (Finland) will be playing in the tournament.
During his minimal time on ice with the Flames this season, he seemed to retain his role as an agitator, just a little more tentative, with 17 penalty minutes in 22 games. He did not get on the board many times, racking up only on goal and two assists, but Pospisil has never been known for his scoring ability. He was in and out of the lineup after returning from the Olympics, particularly after the trade deadline when the Flames began working new faces into their lineup.

Outlook

It is looking like Pospisil will be able to go into next season and try to re-establish himself as a bottom-six player, being a consistent and physical forward for the team. Scoring wise, it is likely that he will be able to get on the board more than he was able to this season, simply due to him coming into the season healthier and in turn, getting sufficiently more playing time.
He has the potential to move up in the lineup if he can establish himself as a valuable player and prove that his struggles this season were simply due to injury, not a decline in skill or effort. There is also the possibility that he will reduce his unnecessary penalty minutes by inherently being a more conscious player and becoming less of an agitator. Considering Pospisil is arguably at his most effective when he’s physical engaged, we’ll see if he can strike a balance.
As noted during exit interviews, Pospisil hopes to work with his teammates to forge a team that can work together to become better as a whole next season.
