The Calgary Flames have made a slew of big trades since mid January, adding a bunch of roster players, prospects and draft choices.
We’ve delved into how the new NHL players have been faring with the Flames. But since there are so many new prospects in the Flames system, we thought we’d dig into the prospects the Flames acquired in their flurry of trades, too.
Abram Wiebe (North Dakota)
The Flames acquired Abram Wiebe’s signing rights from Vegas in the Rasmus Andersson trade on Jan. 18. He’s played 13 games for North Dakota since then, and has two goals and 11 assists for 13 points.
He’s been a fixture on the left side of one of NoDak’s top two defensive pairings. He was named the NCHC’s Defenceman of the Week three times, their Defenceman of the Month once, and was a Second Team All-Star. North Dakota is an at-large invite to the NCAA national tournament as the top seed in the Sioux Falls region.
Gavin White (Calgary Wranglers)
The Flames acquired Gavin White from Dallas in exchange for Jeremie Poirier on Feb. 2. He debuted for the Wranglers on Feb. 3. In 19 games with the Wranglers, he has 0 goals and 2 assists for 2 points.
White’s played on the right side of the Wranglers’ second or third defensive pairing, usually with one of Etienne Morin, Artem Grushnikov or Nick Cicek.
Jonathan Castagna (Cornell)
The Flames acquired Jonathan Castagna’s signing rights from Utah in the MacKenzie Weegar on Mar. 4. In four games with Cornell since the trade, Castagna has 1 goal and 1 assist for 2 points.
Castagna is Cornell’s first line centre. He was named an ECAC First Team All-Star and the conference’s Defensive Forward of the Year. Cornell is an at-large invite for the NCAA’s national tournament.
Max Curran (Edmonton Oil Kings)
The Flames acquired Max Curran’s signing rights from Colorado in the Nazem Kadri trade on Mar. 6. He was injured back on Jan. 14 and recently underwent shoulder surgery. He’s done for the season and slated to go to the University of Massachusetts (UMass) in the fall.
Brennan Othmann (Calgary Wranglers)
The Flames acquired Brennan Othmann from the NY Rangers in exchange for Jacob Battaglia on Mar. 6. He debuted for the Wranglers on Mar. 7. He has 0 goals and 4 assists for 4 points through eight games with the Wranglers.
Othmann has generally been a second or third line left winger for the Wranglers. He’s played with a mixture of Sam Morton, William Stromgren, Clark Bishop and Carter King so far. He’s played on both sides of special teams, too.
