National Hockey League teams make roster changes a lot, and the Calgary Flames are no different. Over the past 12 months, the Flames parted ways with 10 players that ended up playing NHL games during the 2024-25 season.
With the regular season complete and the Stanley Cup playoffs ongoing, let’s check in with the 10 recent-departed Flames to see how they performed this season.
Andrei Kuzmenko, Philadelphia Flyers/Los Angeles Kings
Kuzmenko was traded to the Flyers by the Flames at the end of January. He played somewhat briefly for the Flyers – 7 games played, two goals, three assists, five points and minus-5 – before being traded to the Kings before the trade deadline.
Kuzmenko performed well for the Kings overall. In 22 games he had 5 goals and 12 assists for 17 points and was plus-6. He also performed well in the playoffs, though not well enough to eliminate Edmonton.
Jakob Pelletier, Philadelphia Flyers
Pelletier was sent to the Flyers in the very same late January trade Kuzmenko was involved with. Pelletier stuck around Philly, playing 25 games and posting 5 goals and 3 assists for 8 points and was minus-3.
Walker Duehr, San Jose Sharks
Duehr was claimed off waivers by San Jose in January – about a week before Kuzmenko and Pelletier were traded – and he posted two goals in eight games and went minus-5 with the Sharks. He was placed on waivers again in early March and cleared waivers, joining the Sharks’ AHL team, the Barracuda.
Cole Schwindt, Vegas Golden Knights
Schwindt was claimed off waivers by Vegas in October, right before the start of the season. Schwindt spent the entire season in the NHL, but he only played about half of the time. In 42 games, he had 1 goal and 7 assists for 8 points and was plus-3. Schwindt remains with Vegas during the playoffs.
(Coincidentally, Justin Kirkland had 2 goals and 6 assists for 8 points in 21 games prior to his season-ending injury.)
Oliver Kylington, Colorado Avalanche/New York Islanders/Anaheim Ducks
Kylington left the Flames as a free agent and eventually landed in Colorado.
Between injuries and sort of so-so performances, Kylington didn’t play much with the Avalanche. In 13 games he had 1 goal and 3 assists for 4 points (and was minus-3) before being traded to the Islanders in the Brock Nelson trade. The Islanders subsequently kept him for several minutes before trading him to Anaheim for future considerations. In 6 games with the Ducks, Kylington had an assist and was plus-1.
Jordan Oesterle, Boston Bruins/Nashville Predators
Oesterle signed with the Bruins as a free agent and was a useful depth piece for them for much of the season. In 22 games, he had 1 goal and 5 assists for 6 points (and was plus-3). He was claimed off waivers by Nashville in March. In 15 games with the Predators, he had 3 goals and 1 assist for 4 points (and was minus-3).
Dennis Gilbert, Buffalo Sabres/Ottawa Senators
Gilbert signed with the Sabres as a free agent and was a useful depth piece for them for much of the season. In 25 games, he had 4 assists and was minus-3. He was traded to Ottawa prior to the trade deadline, as part of the Dylan Cozens trade. With Ottawa, he had an assist in four games.
A.J. Greer, Florida Panthers
Greer signed with Florida as a free agent and was a fourth line fixture. In 81 games, he had 6 goals and 11 assists for 17 points and was plus-4. Greer remains with the Panthers during the playoffs.
(Coincidentally, Ryan Lomberg had 3 goals and 10 assists for 13 points in 80 games.)
Andrew Mangiapane, Washington Capitals
Mangiapane was traded to Washington in June. In 81 games with the Capitals, he had 14 goals and 14 assists for 28 points (and was even). Mangiapane remains with the Capitals during the playoffs.
(Coincidentally, Yegor Sharangovich had 17 goals and 15 assists for 32 points in 73 games.)
Jacob Markstrom, New Jersey Devils
Markstrom was traded to New Jersey in June. In 49 games in the Devils’ net, he went 26-16-6 with a 2.50 goals against average and .900 save percentage. He was in net for the Devils during their first-round exit against Carolina.
(Coincidentally, Dustin Wolf went 29-16-8 with a 2.64 goals against average and .910 save percentage in 53 games.)
