There’s nothing wrong with taking a prospect in the latter rounds who has some potential.
That is the case for the draft-eligible prospect we’ll look at in today’s article – Mateo Nobert. There’s a chance the centre will be available when 80th overall in the third round, but let’s get to know the left-shot centre.
Let’s take a look at what Nobert has to offer!

Scouting report

Born in Beaconsfield, Québec on the Island of Montréal, Nobert is a 6’0”, 168 pound left-shot centre. Born on Aug. 12, 2007, Nobert is one of the youngest prospects eligible for June’s 2025 draft.
There’s not a whole lot out there on Nobert, as only four publications rank him as a top draft prospect. The one scouting report I could find came from Neutral Zone, with the site saying this about the 17-year-old.
“Mateo Nobert is a skilled, instinctive offensive forward with the vision and touch to be a dangerous power play contributor. He is slippery in transition, deceptive in-zone, and dangerous when he has time and space to create. But his game is still too finesse-oriented and lacks the pace, urgency, and physical assertiveness to project cleanly as a pro. Right now, his game is built for junior hockey.
That said, he’s a young ’07 with a 6’0″ frame, a good foundation of habits, and room to build. With 10-15 pounds of functional muscle, Nobert could unlock the next level of his game and become a much more consistent and impactful offensive threat.”
The are other notables from that report, with the site noting he’s only a 40% face-off taker with subpar defensive abilities, something you’d love to see improve if the Flames were to take him with the third-round pick.

The numbers

One area where Nobert excels is putting points up. He’s spent the last two seasons with the Québec Maritimes Junior Hockey League’s Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, scoring a pedestrian 12 goals and 26 points in 62 games last season, picking up one assist in seven post-season games.
The centre took a step forward in his age-17 season, scoring 28 goals and 67 points in 57 games, along with two goals and five points in four post-season games. Nobert finished second in team goal scoring (only behind fellow 2025 draft prospect Justin Carbonneau) and third in points, behind Carbonneau and Vincent Desjardins.

Availability and fit

Fit is the biggest concern. Although Nobert is listed as a centre, his face-off ability and subpar defensive abilities could lead to a move to wing in the future. If that’s the case, the Flames have less of a fit as they have a whole bunch of wingers in the organization.
Nobert will almost certainly be available in the first two rounds, but the question becomes, will he be available when the Flames select 80th overall? If so, he could be a good low-risk, high-reward type of signing.
