Calgary Flames captain Mikael Backlund recorded the 600th point of his National Hockey League career with a goal against the New Jersey Devils on Thursday evening.
Backlund, 36, fooled Devils goaltender (and former Flames teammate) Jacob Markstrom with a quick wrister early in the third period of Thursday’s game at the Prudential Center in Newark. Joel Farabee and Brayden Pachal assisted on Backlund’s 14th goal of the 2025-26 season, which gave the Flames a 5-2 lead.
On top of becoming the ninth player to record 600 points with the Flames, Backlund also tied Kent Nilsson for fifth on the team’s all-time goal-scoring leaderboard. The Flames originally selected Backlund in the first round (No. 24 overall) of the 2007 NHL Draft; the Vasteras, Sweden product is also second to Jarome Iginla in total games played with the Flames.
Through 1,131 career NHL games over parts of 18 seasons with the Flames since making his NHL debut in 2008-09, Backlund has collected 229 goals, 371 assists, and 600 points, to go along with 503 penalty minutes and a +80 rating. The 6′ left-shot centre has added 12 goals and 22 points in 42 career playoff contests.

Before Backlund scored, the Flames took control of the game with two goals from John Beecher and one apiece from former Devils players Yegor Sharangovich and Kevin Bahl. New acquisitions Olli Maatta, Ryan Strome, and Victor Olofsson all recorded assists in the game.
The Flames entered Thursday’s action with a 25-32-7 record and 57 points through 64 games this season, good for seventh place in the Pacific Division and 31st overall in the NHL. Their game in New Jersey was the third of a five-game road swing, with the Flames having lost to both the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers before arriving in Newark.
Thursday’s game was the second and final meeting for the Flames and Devils in the 2025-26 season. The Devils defeated the Flames in overtime by a 2-1 final score at the Saddledome on Jan. 19, with Nazem Kadri scoring the only goal for Calgary in the loss.
