The New Jersey Devils could be without their starting netminder for a bit.
In Wednesday’s game against the Boston Bruins, Devils netminder and former Calgary Flame Jacob Markström suffered an injury after Justin Brazeau crashed into him. Markström needed help returning to the dressing room and he wasn’t seen again.
No update has been given on Markström, but he has been great for the Devils this season. This season, the former Flame has a .912 save percentage and a 2.20 goals against average as the Devils are third in the Metropolitan Division, behind the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes.
The netminder was acquired from the Flames for a 2025 protected first-round pick and defenceman Kevin Bahl. It’s been a good trade for both teams, as Dustin Wolf has taken the reins of the Flames and has steered them into a postseason spot over the midway part of the season.
Hopefully, the injury looks worse than it actually is and Markström can return to the net sooner rather than later.
QMJHL’s Newfoundland team to be named the Regiment
It appears the newest Québec Maritimes Junior Hockey League team will be called the Newfoundland Regiment, according to an article from sportslogos.net.
It’s official: The QMJHL’s newest team is the Newfoundland Regiment. And the logo is 🔥
In mid-December, it was reported that the Acadie-Bathurst Titan had been purchased by Glenn Stanford and others and that the team would move to St. John’s Newfoundland to begin the 2025-26 season.
The Titan had a good run in New Brunswick’s fourth-largest city, winning the QMJHL championship in 1999 and 2018, along with the Memorial Cup in 2018. They produced NHL talents such as Patrice Bergeron, Roberto Luongo, and Noah Dobson, along with current Calgary Flame defenceman Daniil Miromanov.
This will be the first QMJHL team in St. John’s, Newfoundland since the St. John’s Fog Devils called it home from 2005 until 2008. However, they’ve also had numerous professional teams over the years, such as the American Hockey League’s Maple Leafs (1991-2005) and the Ice Caps (2011-17), as well as the ECHL’s Newfoundland Growlers (2018-2024).
If history has shown us anything, hockey doesn’t work out well in Newfoundland, as the city of St. John’s is remote in the grand scheme of things. The closest team to St. John’s is the Cape Breton Eagles, who play in Sydney, Nova Scotia. It’s an 18-hour ferry ride/drive to reach the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Ducks trade Pavol Regenda to the Sharks for Justin Bailey
A trade went down on Wednesday, as the Anaheim Ducks traded Pavol Regenda to the San Jose Sharks for Justin Bailey.
Trade: We have acquired Justin Bailey from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Pavol Regenda. Bailey will report to the @SDGullsAHL. #FlyTogether | @Opendoor nhl.com/ducks/news/duc…
This isn’t a big trade by any means, as Regenda has played just 19 NHL games with the Ducks, scoring a goal and three points. So far this American Hockey League season, the left winger has four goals and 36 points. Last season with the San Diego Gulls, he had 19 goals and 34 points.
Bailey, on the other hand, has a bit more experience in the National Hockey League, playing 141 games, playing eight seasons with the likes of the Buffalo Sabres, Philadelphia Flyers, Vancouver Canucks, and the Sharks. Last season was a career-high for the 29-year-old, scoring five goals and 14 points in 59 games with the Sharks.
So far in the 2024-25 American Hockey League season, Bailey has seven goals and 14 points in 33 games and has yet to play an NHL game.
