One of the best young defencemen in the National Hockey League has signed a long-term contract.
Late on Tuesday evening, the Dallas Stars announced that they’ve extended left-shot defenceman Thomas Harley to an eight-year deal worth a little over $10.5 million annually. The contract will kick in at the beginning of the 2026-27 season.
Harley, 24, was drafted 18th overall in the 2019 draft by the Stars. The Syracuse, New York-born defenceman made his NHL debut in the 2020 playoffs, but became a regular in the NHL in 2023-24, where he scored 15 goals and 47 points in 79 games. The following season, Harley scored 16 goals and 50 points in 78 games, with four goals and 14 points in 18 post-season games.
Although Harley was born in the United States, he represented Team Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February, finishing with an assist in two games. The left-shot defenceman also played for Team Canada in the 2021 World Junior Championship.
So far this season, Harley has a goal and eight points in 10 games and is a -3.

Devils will be without Brett Pesce, Cody Glass for some time

Entering Tuesday’s Frozen Frenzy, the New Jersey Devils were on an eight-game win streak with an 8-1 record to begin the year. They fell 8-4 to the Colorado Avalanche, and before the game, it was announced that Brett Pesce will miss at least a month, and Cody Glass was placed on Injured Reserve.
While not as devastating as Jack Hughes’ injury last season, both players are important to the Devils’ depth. This season, Pesce has three assists in nine games, and Glass has two goals in six games.
In their first game of the season, their only other loss this season, Evgenii Dadonov left the game with a hand injury, later determined to be a hand injury. Despite the injuries, the Devils have an 8-2-0 record this season, currently sitting at the top of the league as they’ve played the fewest games of the five teams with 16 points.

Ducks’ Mikael Granlund out week-to-week

Another team that’ll be without a player for some time is the Anaheim Ducks, as Mikael Granlund will be out week-to-week due to a lower-body injury.
Granlund was one of the biggest free agents this past summer, eventually signing a three-year deal worth $7 million. It’s a big loss for the Ducks, as the 33-year-old centre has two goals and eight points through eight games this season.
The Ducks are Granlund’s sixth stop of his career, playing with the Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, Pittsburgh Penguins, San Jose Sharks, and Dallas Stars before joining the Ducks.
