Flames GM Jay Feaster joined us on Sportsnet Radio FAN 960 Monday afternoon and gave us some good tidbits of information following Calgary’s 14 training camp cuts earlier in the day.  More than anything, the news items surrounded injuries with the team, as there were good news bits involving Jarome Iginla and Cory Sarich.
It sounds like the captain is fairly close to returning to the lineup after he left the first practice of training camp with back spasms.  Iginla updated the situation a couple days later and we hadn’t heard much since then, so it was good to hear Feaster’s update Monday.
"He was feeling better today," Feaster told us.  "I’m not sure whether we’ll see him skate (Tuesday) with it being a game day for us, but certainly we would think he would be on the ice on Wednesday."
Apparently Iginla could have been on the ice even earlier, but Feaster revealed progress might have been delayed last week thanks to the nature of the captain’s drive.
"Because of the way Jarome is, he’s such a competitor and he’s such a team guy, he wants to be out there.  He started to feel a little bit better last week and of course, what he does is ‘I’m feeling a little better, I’m not quite ready to skate, but I’m going to do a punishing off ice workout,’ and he got a little bit of a setback as a result of that."
Cory Sarich has yet to skate in contact practices so far this training camp, as he’s been wearing the yellow no-contact jersey in recovery from a pelvic injury.  Thoughts that he might not be ready to start the regular season may not be as accurate as first thought, with Feaster updating that situation as well.
"He’s actually been cleared to practice now," Feaster told me.  "We’ll take the Tour de France jersey off of him and he can get back in and start going full contact."
Finally, the news sounds positive when it comes to the rest of the current Flames on the shelf.
"The guys with the groin injuries, Backlund and Jackman, and even Morrison who had tweaked his a little bit, those guys are getting better and are progressing nicely, no major concerns going on with them."
Feaster hopes those three could be back on the ice by the end of the week.  Knowing how injuries affected training camp one year ago, and consequently affected the start of the regular season, this seems to be rather welcome news.  Brett Carson is the only one who seems a little further away from returning.
"Carson is probably still a little bit away as far as his back," Feaster said.  "That’s a different situation than Jarome."
