In the Calgary Flames’ first game of the season, a 5-2 loss to the Edmonton Oilers, defender Rasmus Andersson lost his cool after being bumped into goaltender Jacob Markstrom. Because of his actions, he’s been fined $5,000 by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety.

The incident occurred in the first period. After Andersson got up, he shoved Yamamoto (who’s much smaller than him) into the end boards and punched him a few times. He received penalties for roughing and elbowing on the play.

The Hockey Night in Canada panel had a different camera angle available to them after the game and walked back the suspension talk. The primary contact was with Andersson’s left hand, but he did also basically pancake Yamamoto against the end boards in anger. Based on the NHL’s statistics, Andersson has five inches of height and 61 pounds of weight on Yamamoto.

Andersson’s set to make $4.05 million in salary this season, excluding escrow holdbacks, so a $5,000 fine is approximately 0.12% of his earnings for the season. The Flames were already playing without Blake Coleman, who was serving the final game of a suspension for boarding levied in the pre-season.

The Flames are back in action on Monday when they host the Anaheim Ducks.
