The Calgary Flames recently exchanged numbers on a potential new contract with representatives for defenceman Rasmus Andersson, and, according to a new report by Daily Faceoff insider Frank Seravalli, it doesn’t look like the two sides are particularly close.
Seravalli, who included Andersson at No. 7 on his latest Trade Targets list, tweeted Friday that the team and player “aren’t on the same page, as expected” as it pertains to a contract extension. Andersson is entering the final year of his current deal, which carries a $4.55 million cap hit.
“Calgary is happy to keep him and auction arguably the premier right-shot D option at the deadline,” Seravalli tweeted. “But he’s also available now.”
Andersson, 28, collected 11 goals and 31 points in 81 games with the Flames in the 2024-25 season, but he finished with a minus-38 rating, the worst in team history. He also represented his native Sweden at the 4 Nations Face-Off and the 2025 IIHF World Championship.
The Flames originally selected Andersson in the second round (No. 53 overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft. The 6’1″ right-handed defender has developed into a standout two-way player during his seven-year NHL career but is approaching the wrong side of 30 and plays a position of strength for the Flames.
With MacKenzie Weegar and Brayden Pachal already established and Zayne Parekh and Hunter Brzustewicz knocking on the door, the Flames have relatively little need to sign another right-handed defender to a long-term contract. Trading Andersson would also give the Flames an opportunity to add even more draft picks to their already impressive stockpile.
Through 536 career NHL games over seven full seasons and two partial ones, Andersson has collected 47 goals, 231 points, and 279 penalty minutes. The Malmö product has also skated in 27 playoff games with the Flames, recording seven goals and 14 points.
(For comparison’s sake, the Flames made their first major move of last offseason on June 19, 2024, sending Jacob Markstrom to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Kevin Bahl and a future first-round pick.)
