The Calgary Wranglers faced a challenge in the Colorado Eagles on Tuesday for their last game of 2025. The Eagles sit at the top of the Pacific Division and have yet to lose a game in overtime this season. Calgary tried to get things done in regulation and had a huge push of four goals in the second period to put some distance between them and their visiting Pacific Division opponents. Unfortunately, this game needed overtime to decide and Colorado kept their perfect overtime record intact with a 6-5 win over the Wranglers.

Lineup notes

Matvei Gridin was not back for this game but head coach Brett Sutter noted on the Sportsnet 960 on Monday that he was close. Thursday may be his first game back instead.
The Wranglers returned to a regular 12 forward and eight defencemen system for this game so that brought in Alex Gallant and Simon Mack was the odd one out on the blue line.

Wranglers lines

Game at a glance

The Wranglers went back to Arsenii Sergeev to start this game. On the Eagles end, they started Trent Miner. Just seven seconds into the game, Etienne Morin was called for high sticking. By 34 seconds later, the Eagles scored on the power play. Jack Ahcan took a shot from the point and Jayson Megna deflected it in.
Calgary managed to get their first few shots on goal but gave up another at 7:54. Matthew Stienburg buried a rebound past Sergeev and gave Colorado a 2-0 lead. Later in the period, Dryden Hunt tried a chance on Miner but was tangled up with two Eagles. When he was skating backwards to the bench, he collided with Matthew Stienburg and was called for interference at 13:11.
Right as this penalty expired, Parker Bell stripped the puck in the neutral zone and scored on the breakaway to cut the Eagles lead in half. Bell’s goal was originally listed as unassisted but updated later to include assists to Clark Bishop and Daniil Miromanov.
Colorado and Calgary exchanged shots to finish the period and at the end of 20 minutes the Wranglers trailed the Eagles 2-1. Shots were pretty even with the Eagles out-shooting the Wranglers 10-9.
Calgary had some good jump in the second period but they left Tye Felhaber virtually undefended in the offense zone and he snuck a shot past Arsenii Sergeev to make it a 3-1 game. This score stood for about three and a half minutes, then William Stromgren scored off the far post to put the Wranglers back within one. Dryden Hunt and Rory Kerins picked up the assists.
25 seconds after Stromgren’s marker, Dryden Hunt came into the zone with a toe drag and tied the game at three. William Stromgren and Jeremie Poirier picked up the assists.
At 11:10, the Eagles took a cross-checking call and 33 seconds into this power play, William Stromgren scored again. It was originally called as Rory Kerins’ goal then it was credited to William Stromgren off his wrist shot. Dryden Hunt and Sam Morton assisted.
At 15:53, the Wranglers were penalty killing when Daniil Miromanov was called for high-sticking. The Wranglers killed off this penalty, then Rory Kerins scored with a quick release shot at 18:49 to put the Wranglers up 5-3.
Right after this goal, the Eagles took a timeout and the rest of the period played out without any other scoring or penalties. At the end of two periods, the Wranglers were up 5-3 and doubled the Eagles in shots 14-7.
Early in the third, Clark Bishop took a tripping penalty. This came at 3:53, then after this was killed off, the Eagles put themselves within one. Ronnie Attard scored top corner at 6:07. The Wranglers held on to their one goal lead for most of the period. At 17:15, the Eagles pulled Trent Miner and Jayson Megna scored the equalizing goal at 17:48.
The Wranglers had one final push in the dying seconds but could not find the back of the net. Regulation finished with a 5-5 score. Early in overtime, the Eagles were about to go on a rush but the play was whistled down because they had played the puck with a high stick. Colorado still had a bit too much time and space in overtime and ended up winning the game with a slap shot from Jack Ahcan at 3:14. The final score was 5-4 and shots finished 37-26 for the Wranglers.
William Stromgren was the only Wrangler on the three stars tonight and he also hit a milestone, earning his 100th AHL point. Clark Bishop also hit a milestone, reaching 100 AHL assists in this game. The only thing that would’ve made this game more special would be finishing it out with a win.
Rory Kerins spoke after the game:
“It’s kind of a tough pill to swallow to be honest. Once again, we were in the drivers seat that game and couldn’t find a way to get it done. So we’ve got to look at some video and learn how to close games out.”

Rory Kerins – 1G, 1A
