The Calgary Wranglers were kept off the scoreboard in their match up against the Bakersfield Condors on Saturday. On Sunday, they looked to reactivate their scoring against another Pacific Division opponent, the San Diego Gulls. After giving up four goals in the first half of this game, it was feeling like a lost cause. The Wranglers scored three in the back half of the second period in less than 90 seconds and were that quickly back into this game. Calgary tried to even things up in the third but couldn’t quite get there. They fell 5-4.

Lineup notes

The Wranglers went to an 11 forward and seven defencemen system for this game. Nick Cicek was able to return from an injury that kept him out of the lineup in Saturday’s game and this brought Parker Bell out of the lineup. Lines took a shift in this game, with most notably, David Silye getting a promotion up to the top line.

Game at a glance

Arsenii Sergeev started his third game in a row, getting the nod in back-to-back nights. On the Gulls’ end, they opted to start Calle Clang in net. Shots on both sides were quite active from puck drop. At 6:32, the Wranglers were called for the first penalty of the game for too many men. William Stromgren served this bench minor.
Calgary killed this penalty off but the first goal went to the Gulls with a bar down shot from Nathan Gaucher. This goal came at 9:57. Just over a minute later, San Diego scored again with a goal from their Captain, Ryan Carpenter. Carpenter was on the doorstep and shovelled the puck into the back of the net at 10:58.
At 12:09, Sam Colangelo took Etienne Morin down from behind in a scary cross-check. Morin was able to get up on his own and Colangelo was called for a game misconduct that Yegor Sidorov served. The Wranglers got a five minute power play out of this. They gave up a shorthanded breakaway at 13:14, but Sergeev was able to turn it away. Calgary only managed one shot on this five minute man advantage.
They had another power play chance at 19:17, when San Diego was called for too many men. Sasha Pastujov served this call. At the end of the first, the Wranglers were behind 2-0 and trailing 11-7 in shots. Calgary had 1:17 of carryover power play time to start the second.
After this penalty expired, Chase Pauls lost his footing and wasn’t able to get back in time to defend the net. Sasha Pastujov passed a puck up to Nathan Gaucher, who was waiting in front of the net to score his second of the night and make it a 3-0 Gulls game. This goal came at 2:04. Five seconds later, Alex Gallant was called for holding.
Early into Gallant’s call, Nikolas Brouillard got the stick up on Turner Ottenbreit and this would be called as a double minor. This four on four lasted 1:13, then Calgary got the rest of the time to work on the power play. After this power play, Calgary only had one shot on the board in the middle frame.
At 8:37, Alex Gallant was called for roughing and on the last second of this power play, Cal Burke scored on a back door play to make it a 4-0 game for the Anaheim Ducks affiliate. This started a run of goals for the Wranglers in a stunning last six minutes of the period. It started with Carter King at 14:41, when Dryden Hunt set him up on the doorstep. Alex Gallant picked up the secondary assist.
29 seconds later, Clark Bishop scored another goal for Calgary with a backdoor tip-in. David Silye and Nick Cicek picked up the assists.
Less than a minute later, the Wranglers got another goal from Dryden Hunt to put them right back into this game and within one. This goal was set up by Daniil Miromanov and Aydar Suniev.
Within a stretch of 1:23, the Wranglers put up three goals from three different scorers and crawled their way back into this game. The score was 4-3 at the end of 40 minutes and shots were an even 10-10 through the middle frame.
Just under four minutes into the third period, Artem Grushnikov hit his head on the glass above the boards and was down on the ice on his stomach. He needed help off the ice and left the game to be evaluated. He did not return to the game.
At 12:29, Daniil Miromanov was called for slashing. This penalty kill was mostly done then Arsenii Sergeev was called for tripping at 14:27. They had a five-on-three for two seconds, then right back to a mostly full penalty kill. After Calgary successfully killed this off, they pulled Sergeev for the extra attacker at 18:37. At 19:14, Nathan Gaucher scored his hat trick goal on the empty net to put San Diego up 5-3.
The Wranglers put Sergeev back in, then pulled him out at 19:20. At 19:59, Sam Morton squeezed a backhand shot past Clang and made it a 5-4 game.
They took the last face-off and this game came to an end. The Wranglers fell 5-4 and were out-shot 30-23.
