The Calgary Wranglers wrapped up their weekend back to back series against the Abbotsford Canucks for a mid-afternoon game on Sunday. They fell on Saturday night in a five round shootout and were looking to pick up a win to close out this brief road trip. The scoring went back and forth in this game similarly to Saturday’s competition, but it would be a Canucks goal in the third period that carried them to the win and completed the weekend sweep over the Wranglers. The final score was 3-2.
Lineup notes
The Wranglers were able to fly Connor Murphy out for this game in time so he backed up Arsenii Sergeev. Calgary opted to switch things a little bit, skating 11 forwards and seven defencemen. Etienne Morin returned to the lineup and Carter Wilkie came out for this game. Owen Say was listed as a lower body injury prior to puck drop, but no timeline was announced for return.

Game at a glance
The Wranglers really had no choice but to put Sergeev back in after he played the majority of Saturday’s game. They nearly had an EBUG scenario for Calgary and neither goalie was 100% fresh, as both of them played Saturday night. Sergeev for the Wranglers and Murphy for the Rapid City Rush. For the Canucks, they also had to stick with Jiri Patera and did need an EBUG, Alex Kotai, a 52-year-old mortgage broker, just in case.
Calgary gave up another goal on the first shot for the second game in a row. Saturday’s was 18 seconds in and this game, it was 58 seconds in. Nick Poisson scored off a bar down shot and took another early lead for Abbotsford. Things settled down a bit after this opening goal, then the first penalty was called against Simon Mack for delay of game at 8:52.
After the Wranglers successfully killed off this penalty, they managed to even things up with a goal from the top line. Sam Morton scored for the second night in a row off a set up from Dryden Hunt and Matvei Gridin.
At 16:47, Rory Kerins almost made it a 2-1 game when he chipped in a rebound on Jiri Patera. He celebrated as if he scored but the officials waved it off. In the replay, the puck was sitting on the goal line and not over before Patera covered up. A couple of minutes later, the Canucks regained a lead off a scrambled cluster of shots that was finished off by Ty Mueller with a backhand shot he flipped over Sergeev. This goal came at 17:41.
Less than a minute later, Abbotsford was sent to the box for hooking. The period finished up with some carryover power play time for the Wranglers. Abbotsford had a 2-1 lead over Calgary headed into the first intermission and the home team outshot the Wranglers 9-7.
In the second period, there were 24 seconds of power play time left but that came and went without any Calgary scoring activity. A few minutes later, the Wranglers evened things up once again with a goal from Dryden Hunt, who also scored in the game prior. The top line continued to generate with Matvei Gridin and Etienne Morin picking up the assists.
The Canucks had a bit of push back after this goal and got an opportunity on a four minute power play when Sam Morton was called for a high-sticking double minor at 12:36. Calgary had their top line centre’s back on this and managed to kill off the whole penalty without giving up an Abbotsford shot on goal. Instead, Abbotsford got a few looks in the dying minutes of the period and by the end of 40 minutes of play, the score was tied 2-2. Shots in the second period were 9-5 Canucks.
The Wranglers were on their heels for most of the first half of the third period, and it showed itself especially at 10:24 when Anris Ravinskis scored the go-ahead goal. He took a pretty harmless wrist shot that Sergeev mishandled, and it fell in behind him across the line.
This woke Calgary up but their efforts would come too late. The Canucks made it especially difficult for them to clear the zone to pull Sergeev for the extra attacker and they were only able to do so at 18:40. The Wranglers were unable to get any other shots on net before the final buzzer and they fell 3-2. Shots finished 22-18 for the Canucks.
Scoring stat summary
