Game at a glance

Owen Say got the start for this game and Pheonix Copley went the distance between the pipes for the Reign. The Wranglers had the jump in the beginning and got an early chance on the power play when Otto Salin was called for delay of game just 1:35 into the game.
Their power play got a bit of momentum going and this led into an even strength marker from Daniil Miromanov at 5:36. Miromanov came out with some speed during a shift change and caught the Reign sleeping with a quick unassisted shot on Copley.
The Reign followed this up with their first goal of their night 1:06 later with a shot from Kirill Kirsanov from the slot and through traffic in front. After this goal, Turner Ottenbreit was tagged for tripping at 8:03 and at 9:32, Andre Lee gave Ontario the lead with a power play goal off a slap shot rebound from the blue line.
The Wranglers had a couple more penalties to kill off before the period came to a close and by the end of the frame, they trailed 2-1. Shots throught 20 minutes were 8-7 Ontario.
Less than a minute into the second period, Martin Chromiak added to the Reign’s lead with a top corner, short side goal. Calgary wasn’t able to get much going on this man advantage and a few minutes later, the Reign made it a 4-1 game.
At 12:32. Kirill Kirsanov scored his second of the game and of his AHL career. He took a wrist shot from the blue line that ended up in the back of the net. Calgary deflated after this goal and Ontario managed to get another one on the board with a marker from Nikita Alexandrov at 17:24.
36 seconds later, Calgary’s frustrations boiled over and it resulted in three roughing minors called. Two of them went against David Silye and Alex Gallant, putting them on the penalty kill. The scoring stopped in the second then at the end of the frame, the Wranglers were down 5-1. Shots in the second period were 9-3 Ontario.
Owen Say did not come out on the ice for the third period and Connor Murphy came in fro him in net instead. Murphy has played in 19 games with the Wranglers over the last two seasons and this ended up being his first appearance for the team in the 2025-26 season.
Calgary started to push back but could not make a dent on the score differential. Instead, the Reign made it 6-1 with a goal from Francesco Pinelli through the legs of Murphy at 5:15. Ontario kept the pressure on and the anger from the visitors showed itself again at 7:35, when Otto Salin and Lucas Ciona got into a bit of a scrap that landed them both offsetting roughing calls.
This ignited a bit of life into Calgary and at 14:23, the Reign lost Glenn Gawdin to a slashing major and a game misconduct. The Wranglers managed to close off the game with a couple more shots but this game would finish up with a 6-1 final score for Ontario. Shots finished 24-20 for the Reign.

Next up

The Wranglers don’t have long to think about this one as game two will be on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. MT. They’ll look to improve between the pipes and generate some more offence against Ontario so they can close the road trip on a high note.
