The Calgary Wranglers wrapped up their brief road series against the Tucson Roadrunners in a mid-afternoon game on Sunday. They fell 5-2 on Saturday and while Sunday was a better showing, they fell again. This time in overtime. Calgary got out to an early lead, Tucson caught up then the Wranglers could not hold the lead they regained in the middle frame. In overtime, Calgary got away with a couple of chances that could’ve ended up in the back of their net, but their luck ran out and the Roadrunners completed the weekend sweep over them.

Lineup notes

Prior to puck drop, the Wranglers provided an injury update on Ivan Prosvetov and Aydar Suniev. They remain on a week to week status. Added to this report was Matvei Gridin. Gridin was pushed down to the ice quite hard in Saturday’s game and was listed as day-to-day with an upper body injury.
Taking Gridin out left the forwards quite lean so they opted to skate 11 forwards and seven defencemen for this game. Alex Gallant came out of the lineup and Lucas Ciona and Simon Mack came in. Jeremie Poirier was the extra defender and William Stromgren and Martin Frk were picking up the extra shifts on the fourth line.

Wranglers lines

Game at a glance

On this back-to-back, both teams swapped their netminders for the back half of the series. Arsenii Sergeev got his second AHL start and Jaxson Stauber got the nod for the Roadrunners. The Wranglers got going early with an early lead in the first minute.
After the first Wranglers line change of the game, the Wranglers came up on an odd man rush and William Stromgren and Dryden Hunt exchanged a couple of passes before Hunt finished off the play in the back of the net. This goal came on the first shot of the game, just 57 seconds in and Rory Kerins picked up the secondary assist.
Two minutes later, the first penalty call went against Tucson when Montana Onyebuchi was called for hooking. Calgary managed a couple of shots, then they were in the box when Lucas Ciona was called for cross-checking. Shortly after they killed off Ciona’s penalty, Jeremie Poirier was in the box for tripping. They weren’t able to kill this penalty as Noel Nordh scored on a back door play that he shot short side on Sergeev. This equalizing goal came at 8:45.
Right after this goal, Turner Ottenbreit and Maveric Lamoureux dropped the gloves at centre ice. These two were chirping each other towards the end of Saturday’s game when Lamoureux left the rink and was egging on the audience. Ottenbreit went after him and they were split up before anything escalated. Lamoureux got the better of the fight but Ottenbreit still landed a couple of punches.
This ignited some momentum for the home team while these skaters served their fighting majors as they had a run of shots. Sergeev kept turning them away and at 17:22, the Wranglers got their lead back with a goal from William Stromgren. Carter King forced a turnover and he and Stromgren came up on a three-on-one rush. Stromgren scored off a top corner wrist shot that popped Stauber’s water bottle off the back of the net.
Calgary put up a couple more shots before the end of the frame and after 20 complete minutes of play, they led the Roadrunners 2-1 and were tied 10-10 in shots. The Roadrunners kept the same shot pace in the second period but did not manage to tie anything up. They took a pair of penalties but the second finished the same way it started with a 2-1 Wranglers lead. Shots in the middle frame were 10-4 Tucson.
Early in the third, the Roadrunners evened things up. At 1:51, Max Szuber caught up to a cleared puck halfway up the zone and walked into a shot that beat Sergeev to tie the game up. A couple of minutes after this marker, Martin Frk was called for hooking.
The Wranglers killed this penalty and the rest of the period played out with minimal stoppages. At the end of regulation, the score was an even 2-2 and they needed some extra time to determine a winner. Calgary was outshot 9-4 in the third period.
In overtime, Clark Bishop got the first shot of the extra frame, then it was all Tucson taking the puck the other way. The home team almost won it off a shot off the crossbar then a couple of minutes later, they beat Sergeev to win 3-2. Shots in overtime were 5-1 Tucson. The Wranglers fell in their second straight game and were swept on the weekend.

Scoring stat summary
